I never knew the difference between a hurricane, monsoon, cyclone, typhoon, or tornado until I watched this.

typhoon comes from Mandarin 台风 (tai-feng), which in turn comes from more ancient forms meaning “long-lasting wind”

Tornadoes exclusively overland might be right but there is no mention of water spouts which are tornadoes over water I believe

1. Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones are the same; storms over warm oceans are named based on their location and intensity. 2. Monsoons are seasonal wind patterns, not single storms, bringing heavy rain. 3. Tornadoes form over land from severe thunderstorms.

Great breakdown! One cool extra detail: while hurricanes/typhoons/cyclones are basically identical, the Northwest Pacific (typhoon zone) sees way more of them each year—about 25-30 named storms vs ~10-15 in the Atlantic hurricane basin. That’s why places like the Philippines and Japan get hit so often. Also, fun etymology note: “typhoon” likely comes from the Chinese “tai fung” (大風 = big wind), which fits perfectly.

Some more: five types of dust devil and two types of Waterspout, one of which is a tornado over water.
