I Never Learned To Do an Oil Change

I had this moment with a buddy at work who is a boomer when I said "I need to learn to solder wires" He said "They didn't teach you that in shop class?" He then got depressed when I told him Wood Shop, Auto Shop, and Home Ec all got cut before I went to high school

to be fair you can just do things..no one has to teach you..Youtube has been around forever..you should get curious about things Don't worry if your not mechanically inclined..very few are in the beginning it takes time

Very little taught in school is useful anymore, but we keep spending money on it...

Geometry should have been a companion class with woodshop.

Buddy, us GenXers fought really hard to keep vocational studies like auto-shop, wood-shop, home-ec, ag, etc. in schools. But after we were gone, those vocations went out the window. They were cutting funding to pay more to board members, administrators, & "teachers."

If you have money you dont really need to know any of that stuff but if you're poor it sure comes in handy.

I did more valuable learning on my own, well after graduating. Basic car maintenance should absolutely be taught in school in this country again. That and the stuff you do, financial literacy would have been such a boon to me back then.

Drain the oil from the bottom of the car then use a water hose in the top to flush out all the old oil. You'll know it's clean when the water is clear. Putt the plug back in the bottom then refill the oil in the top. No need to change the filter as the water cleans that out too. 😋

For what it's worth, I taught myself, and at the end of the day it's good to know and do yourself at least 1x, but also cheaper to take it to a local shop - especially if you didn't have the Jack, Jack stands, or tools. Also didn't get any of this or common sense stuff in school

Sadly home economics, auto shop and wood working shop have been phased out due to budgets. My kids (now 26,19,18) know nothing about life skills. They can barely write as typing is everything now. I've been teaching them these skills.

I mean a lot of people don’t know how to but it never hurts to teach yourself.

My dad taught me that but I learned to weld & butcher a whole animal in high school.

As a fatherless bastard who grew up the only male in a house of women: DIY books and service manuals are great and can be had cheap. Then there's just doing stuff blind. This can be even more valuable because you'll learn about first aid pretty quickly, too.

That's the wrong mindset. School may not have taught you how to do an oil change, but you're more than capable of teaching yourself. The resources are out there. It's no different than teaching yourself how to follow a budget or portion controls. It just takes discipline.

My high school - Sr year you took either Economics OR Personal Finance. (Depending on ability - AP kids took Econ) PF class was balancing a check book, how to make a budget, how to track your finances, how loans work...

Caleb, the information is out there. I've learned how to change my brake pads, replace my belt, change all of the fluids and almost all other required maintenance for my vehicle. Even swapped the fuel pump. There's no excuse for not knowing this day and age except for laziness

that's sad cause it's super easy you just drain the oil take the old oil filter off put on a new one and then add the oil

School used to be about life skills. Reading, writing, basic arithmetic, civics, simple history, some social studies. THEN, the Powers That Be saw that school could be a powerful force to indoctrinate the masses. NOW, school teaches about perceived injustices, inequalities, anger, protest, and why capitalism must be destroyed. The reading level is down, math skills are down, critical thinking is down, knowledge about civics/history/social studies are down. No one knows how to manage their own finances, much less boil a pot of noodles, or fry an egg, or even make coffee. 🤷‍♂️

ICE car owners should learn how to do oil changes. It's a good opportunity to look over the underside of the car. I see two major fckups from shop oil changes. One resulted in a $40k bill for a Porsche engine rebuild.

Schools arent supposed to teach life skills like that - parents are. Schools are about academic skills. Dont get me wrong, its been failing in that recent decades

Yeah. I went online and was able to replace spark plugs, belt, alternator, and oil pan on my car. Way cheaper and not that hard.

I'll teach ya everything you need or want to know about cars, if you teach me finances.

I have hundreds of useful skills.

Shoutout to my old auto shop teacher. Gary Moore. Taught us all kinds of shit, even had the ladies doing tasks. We’d change teachers oil, rotate tires, change filters, batteries, brakes, etc. He had some of the more skilled people refurbishing engines. He was the man indeed.

Yah it’s true they cut all classes that were practical right before as millennials got to high school. The biggest factor is economic. There are liability issues with the infinite sueing culture and also strained economy from 2008. The uniparty loves the infinite lawsuit culture

I’m trying to start a nonprofit organization where I teach the youth life skills. I am a carpenter and Painter by trade. I work on cars as a hobby. I cook a lot of things from scratch. I’m calling it the useful youth group

Because those that make the rule that the Education system follow, would loose their Private Funding from Superpacs (it's companies not People who fund most superpacs, and some billionaires.) otherwise we would have a completely different economy. I believe most people should know how to farm, and grow their own food, and at least be sufficient with 50% of their own veggies/fruit. and that private companies shouldn't be allowed to own a majority of single family homes, competing with the average person for those properties. not to mention, how private investment/equity firms bought up massive amounts of homes, then got funding through NGOs/Section 8 housing (Biden Era AGOs providing for illegals while ignoring veterans.), after raising the price for their rent after overpaying for properties. (in some cases 200% more, and not quite 300% more in my local Area. there was a thing from realators talking about private investment overpaying for homes to buy up during that era.) all happening after Mark Zuckerbergs private election funding got Joe Biden and is autopen into office. School really wasted our sponge brains to teach us algebra and trigonometry and foreign languages that none of my friends remember any of it

Everything now is about college readiness. Many schools got rid of shop and home ec because people needed another year of history or foreign language to qualify for college.
