@WMUHockey @patfersch Some of our Kirkwood Pioneer Hockey players had the chance to see @WMUHockey both in the semi's & the championship game. Amazing group - no quit in them whatsoever and just go go go! Way to set the example Mustangs!

@WMUHockey @patfersch I agree with this completely, but I had an interesting conversation with a Jr. A coach recently and he felt that player-led / player disciplined teams are harder than they used to be. Players used to be able to deal with things in the room that he's dealing with now.

Notre Dame DC Chris Ash - What Players Want in a Coach & Accountability Every player wants 3 things in a coach: - A coach he can trust (Character). Do what you say you will do. - A coach that cares about them (Connection). Get to know them outside of football. - A coach that makes them better (Competence). Help your players be their best. - A negative environment creates negative thoughts. - A positive environment creates the power of possibilities. - A player can become what we constantly tell him he can be. Accountability - Coaches must take accountability for their responsibility. Own it! - Don't ask the players to do something you are unwilling to do. - No BCD. It will ruin us from within. It doesn't solve or change anything. Blame others. Complain about what we don't have. Defend poor play. - Never blame a game on a player. - Don't focus on what a player can't do, figure out what he can do and focus on that.

DOESN’T MATTER HOW SKILLED YOU ARE… IF YOU DON’T IMPACT WINNING! This is a big conversation I have with High School Coaches and parents. There are a lot of players that work year round on skill development but they don’t learn and/or be held accountable to the sacrifice, focus, energy, effort it takes to be a winning player for their team.

I’ve had conversations with a lot of youth hockey coaches and program directors that are scared to coach their top players hard and cater to their parents for fear of them leaving the team and organization. At the end of the day, not holding your best players or their parents accountable is such a disservice to the kid. They aren’t learning valuable lessons about effort and accountability that are necessary traits to achieve higher levels in the sport.

For us, here at Harding, that begins and ends with trying to honor God." Good stuff here from Harding head coach Paul Simmons, you can see why coaches and players are loyal to this program. It starts at the top. Harding is 15-0 this year and playing for a D2 National Championship this Saturday. A solid culture goes hand in hand with success.
