"I slept on the floor so that the team which was going through a hard time could see me on the floor, that they knew I was not in some Ivory Tower, whatever pain they experienced, I had it more" -Elon Musk

Elon Musk: The team could see me sleeping on the floor, so they knew I was there, and that made a huge difference. “For a while I was just sleeping under my desk, which is out in the open in the factory for an important reason. It was damn uncomfortable sleeping on that floor. And always when I woke up, I'd smell like metal dust. I just slept on the floor under my desk so that, during shift change, the entire team could see me. This is important because the team, if they think their leader is off somewhere having a good time, drinking mai tais on a tropical island – which I could definitely have been doing and would much have preferred to do, I'm not actually a masochist, I think – but the thing is that since the team could see me sleeping on the floor during shift change, just with nothing, they knew I was there and that made a huge difference. And then they gave it their all.” From: Baron Investment Conference, November 4, 2022

Someone asked Elon Musk how he prioritizes with so many things going on at once: "Prioritize? It's usually been out of desperation, not selection. It's not 'Oh, let's sit back and leisurely decide how we should spend these resources.' It's 'This isn't working. If we don't make it work, we're going to go bankrupt, so we better make it work.' I felt like Indiana Jones running down the temple. There's a huge boulder chasing you and you need to jump across a giant pit in the ground. If you slow down, the boulder will crush you. And if you don't make the leap, you'll die in the pit. That's prioritizing. I lived in the factories for three years, running around like a maniac through every part of the factory. I slept on the floor so the team going through a hard time could see me on the floor and knew I was not in some ivory tower. Whatever pain they experienced, I experienced more."

Elon Musk on why he slept on the Tesla factory floor for 3 years “I was living in the factory in Fremont and the one in Nevada for three years straight. That was my primary residence. I’m not kidding. Literally. I slept on a couch, and at one point a tent on the roof, but for a while there, I was just sleeping under my desk which was out in the open in the factory.” As Elon explains, he did this for an important reason: “I slept on the floor under my desk so that during shift change, the entire team could see me. This is important because if the team thinks their leader is off somewhere having a good time, drinking Mai Tais on a tropical island [it’s demoralizing]… Since the team could see me sleeping on the floor during shift change, they knew I was there. That made a huge difference, and they gave it their all.” This principle that leaders must be visible is something Elon emphasized in a memo to Tesla employees ending remote work and requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week in person: “The more senior you are, the more visible must be your presence. That is why I lived in the factory so much – so that those on the line could see me working alongside them. If I had not done that, Tesla would long ago have gone bankrupt.”

There was a couch in the conference room. Musk chose the floor. Musk: “I stopped using the couch in the little conference room and just slept on the floor under my desk so that during shift change, the entire team could see me.” This is not a story about sacrifice. It is a story about what presence actually costs. Any executive can send the 2 AM email. Any manager can give the speech about how much the mission matters. Any leader can run the meeting where everyone leaves feeling inspired. None of that costs a thing. The floor costs everything. Musk: “For a while there, I was just sleeping under my desk, which is out in the open in the factory… when I woke up, I’d smell like metal dust.” Metal dust. Not a hotel. Not a back office. Not the couch twenty feet away he specifically stopped using. The open floor. Where every worker coming off shift had to walk past him. That was the entire point. Musk: “If they think that their leader is off somewhere having a good time, drinking Mai Tais on a tropical island, which I definitely could have been doing and would much have preferred to do…” He preferred the island. He chose the floor anyway. That distinction is the whole story. Comfort was available. He refused it because his team couldn’t have it. The moment they see that, something locks in them permanently. You can ask people to suffer for a mission you personally sit out. They will comply. They will never bleed. Musk: “Since the team could see me sleeping on the floor during shift change, they knew I was there. And that made a huge difference.” Knew I was there. Not knew I cared. Not knew I believed. Not knew I was watching. Knew I was there. Every word ever written about leadership eventually collapses into that sentence. Shared suffering is the only thing that converts a workforce into something willing to bleed for what you are building. The couch was right there. He passed it every night. The floor wasn’t the point. The passing was. That’s not sacrifice. That’s a man who already decided what he was, and just needed the floor to prove it.

Elon Musk: It's important that engineers see the pain in the factory. “One of the things I like is just make sure that engineering and production are closely connected so that engineering is not like off in some ivory tower and can't see the problems on the production floor. When engineering is right here and you walk out and you see the production floor, you can actually see where you've designed something that is very difficult to manufacture. You can see the pain in the factory, where things aren't getting made.” Interview with Sandy Munro, May 29, 2025

What’s especially frustrating is that in the DLCs of Mankind Divided I felt I had a grip on the character. It was fully performance captured, the tech was ready, and they understood that I knew the character so well they just let me do my thing. …what could have been.

Bob Odenkirk says the How I Met Your Mother cast liking each other was “so weird” to him “The first time I went in the read through, I was like, ‘What is going on?’... everybody was smiling” “They read their script and laughed and then they clapped at the end of it. I was like, ‘What is going on? Is there somebody here that you’re doing a show for?’” “The more I did the show, the more I realized, no, they like each other. They liked the show they’re on and they like each other... it was so weird”

Kamala Harris on The View on election night: "That night -- I grieved in a way that I have not since my mother died. The pain was not at all about losing a race. I knew what it was going to mean for the country ... all I could say over and over was 'my God, my God, my God.' It was very difficult."

Giannis on the lack of whistle he's been getting this season: "If I fall on the floor usually somebody push me or somebody hit me in my face. My coaches tell me hey man you're so hard to be officiated. You're having the shot treatment like they foul you and they don't call nothing you just play through contact. I had a basket which I thought in my opinion thought it was and one. Coming down I get pushed...why is that not called?"
