The is a great example of how brainwashed everyone is. The issue is not who gets taxed. The issue is the government is too big. The bureaucracy has ballooned. It’s a spending problem not a tax paying problem.

Capital gains are most often earned on money that was already taxed.

All tax structures and mods are absolutely meaningless, without both addressing and fixing a significant amount of the waste and fraud. You just can't tax in the face of what is probably trillions in probable criminal fraud. The question is, who can actually accomplish that?

Doesn’t one have to initially pay the 50% tax on the money he earned, before he invests it and is subject to the subsequent capital gains tax on investment earnings? Why did he gloss over this?

There is no monetary solution to inequality because there is a fixed amount of California coastal real estate and Ivy League college spots. All excess consumer surplus will be spent on additional health or location or status, no matter how marginal. If you really want to help people, get out of their way to solve their own problems by strengthening individual property rights.

The solution is to lower wage taxes to 25% (as it was during the roaring 80s); Not to raise capital taxes to 50%. When a profitable exchanged is taxed, there are fewer of them. We want more profitable income and capital exchanges, not fewer.

The idea that we won’t be working is crazy. Trust me, you do not want that future. We may not be working on the same things, but we will all be working. And that is a good thing.

Capital gains is a second tax. It should be less. Worker buys stock with his paycheck after paying 50%. Then taxed again when he sells the stock

When people don’t work/contribute and become dependent on payouts they tend to lose agency. The idea of full time leisure society seems appealing but in reality will likely lead to degradation. Similar to what’s already happening with millennials and genz flirting with socialism

The truth is everyone is going to have to get better at working with their hands, UBI will not be good for society. Companies who are taxed to high will leave to countries that have lower taxes and the west will become poor.

The same old deceitful argument about lower tax on capital gains. Invested capital is money earned BEFORE with taxes already paid. So capital gains tax is tax on the same money again.

If our government actually spent less money, had less regulations and less taxes. America would boom! Government has to stop spending creates more agencies!

How is it that we’ll be in a world of abundance, there is no labor, and those companies are making trillions? Who’s paying them?

Just unwind the tax scams - Tax capital gains at income rates, tax long term borrowing against assets, end step up in basis, and stop making the estate tax optional. It'll never happen but that is how you'd do it.

Disappointing that a man worth over a billion dollars still doesn’t grasp some basic concepts of capitalism. I guess I have the advantage of knowing the Bible is literally true. We are *never* going to “live in a world of abundance” where people don’t need to work. Why? Because human desires is infinte. 200 years ago people didnt have cars. Today, everyone has a car but now everyone wants a Ferrari. We don’t have the capability of producing 7 billion Ferraris. The LORD said He cursed the Earth so we would have to work and stay busy (less time for sinning). The best (but not ideal) solution to income “inequality” is to shrink all levels of government and get it the freak out of our lives. Trying to have equitable incomes is like trying to have equitable school grades or touchdowns in football. The hardest working students will earn the best grades. Training the hardest will give you the most touchdowns/yards. Taking away points from the student that aced the test to give it to the lazy bum that scored 41 is dumb, immoral and counter productive. The student that got 41 could have aced the test on his own without taking points from the higher earner. How is mainstream discourse still at this low level? I legit overcame that bullshit mindset at like age 20. This dude is like 60 years old and a billionaire… We need Jesus now more than ever.

Nonsense. The discount for capital gains over income tax, is to allow for inflationary gains; without having to index all gains to calculate the real gain.

Why is the government unable to do more with less while everyone else is? They are endlessly demanding more while doing less than nothing, anything they are involved in gets exponentially worse than if they were not involved at all. Why?

One additional point: capital gains before you sell isn’t 25%, it’s zero, and if you never sell, when your children inherit the assets it will never be taxed. (You might have mentioned it in the full interview.) It’s such a big loophole that it’s political suicide to even suggest reforming it.

Totally misses the point of the reason why, capital money was ALREADY taxed when initially earned, so it’s doubled taxed when taxed as cap gains. Regardless the whole system is stupid, and there is a much better serious solution: @FairTaxOfficial

Sounds to me like Chamath is advocating for socialism, or, tax the rich. He's made his, but some of us in the investor class haven't gotten to his level. Which of the haves is he expecting to fund the rest?

I still believe this... "If they can track what 100+ million Americans earn and owe in taxes, they can sure as hell track where every dollar of that tax money actually goes." Unless Govt is accountable, there is no point discussing who/what should be taxed.

Why not just reduce the amount of tax on wage earners? That is the “simple solution” here. But the reality of that is the people making the decisions on how to spend that money would be out of a job. And of course, that CAN’T be good for America.

The capitalist that pays less in taxes doesn’t always find success in his investment. In fact I bet more fail then succeed. If the incentive of a lower tax wasn’t there nobody would try. Then what? Lots of mattresses stuffed with cash? That’s not good

wow, I can't believe they invented investment capital in the 40s/50s/60s/70s and 80s. This might be your dumbest take. This disparity between capital gains and labor came about the day labor taxation started. Stop treating the government like your daddy.

The answer is that tax on labor should come down dramatically! Government spending should be slashed, even more dramatically!

Incredibly dumb. With no investment, there is no jobs. Taxing investment will reduce opportunities to contribute. Tax more workers(not = taxing workers more) so we care about how the gov spends money.= where Bezos wrong. We do not have a tax revenue problem! Where Bezos is👍
