The Ghost Stories English dub was INTENTIONALLY done in a comedic and parody fashion. It was meant to be more funny because they knew the audience in the US would not understand many of the Japanese lore items they used in the show.

Everyone knows the myth that this anime preformed really bad in Japan, and that’s why this dub is so insane, but it’s actually not true, it did just fine, and nobody knows why Fuji TV told ADV to just do whatever they wanted, this has gone without a good explanation to this day

They were given the creative freedom to do whatever they wanted because the Japanese version was actually a flop. The only thing that they weren’t allowed to change was how they defeated the ghosts.
