It's absolutely true - sexuality was woven into character, not just slapped on top of either bad actors or lousy scripts. Also, editing today is always multiple brief shots and frenetic edits, robbing the mise en scene of sexual tension. Back in the day, these single-shot scenes allowed time (and physical space) for the electricity to develop and permeate the air.
