Not true. The last names were British they were part of guilds back England centered on their profession. In the US slaves worked fields for rich land owners who were probably wealthy skilled labor in England.

The slave took the surname of the master. The surname came about after the bubonic plague because people had to abandon entire villages in order to get away from the sickness and it made it less confusing. So the slave didn't have to profession the master did and gave it to them.
