Announcing the Open Model Series: a new series on open source AI models, with merve of Hugging Face. Hugging Face is the open model hub: it hosts model weights, datasets, evals, & demo apps, and maintains the open-source libraries (like transformers) used to run and train them. I think of it like GitHub, but for AI models. You can download open models and run them on your own machines. In this series we'll cover what open source and open weight models are, how they work, how to run them yourself, and why they're important. By the way - this video is edited entirely with Claude! I can make a tutorial on how I did it. If there's a question you want answered about open models, leave it in the comments. We will read them all. Episode 1 is out soon.

Can 1,000 real-world 3D scenes make a state-of-the-art model better? At OVER Research, we tested it by fine-tuning R3, a state-of-the-art streaming 3D reconstruction model, on roughly 1,000 scenes from the OVER dataset. The result: 25% lower trajectory error on our real-world environments compared to the deployed public checkpoint. And we did it using only 1,000 scenes, the same open dataset anyone can download for free, out of the 285,000+ real-world 3D scenes OVER has today. If you have compute hungry AI ML tasks, you can spin up an Intel Gaudi2 instance and watch it just rip. I wrote a quick Python script to use the facebook/detr-resnet-50 model (🙏🏻 Hugging Face) to detect and label objects in a video. It's interesting that no one is talking about Intel Gaudi vs NVIDIA A100 or H100. Gaudi2 isn't cheap at $10.42/hour but it feels like a viable alternative to fighting someone for an A100 or H100. Here's my code if you want to try it out:

Apple built a large foundation model and fine-tuned it on multiple tasks. But they are doing something very clever: They load a single model in memory and use different adapters to specialize the model on the fly. I recorded a video to show you how to write the code to do the same thing Apple is doing. I explain everything step by step. Here is what I'll show you in the video: 1. We'll load two datasets 2. Then load a large model 3. Then, we'll fine-tune the model on both datasets I'll use LoRA to fine-tune the model. Nvidia has just announced Alpamayo 2 Super, an open 34 billion parameter reasoning vision-language-action model designed to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles. This new model combines the NVIDIA Cosmos 3 Super reasoning model with a 2 billion parameter diffusion-based action expert model, and is post trained with reinforcement learning. The model can return multiple outputs: future trajectory plans, reasoning traces, grounded answers to questions about the scenes, and auto label generation. The model weights are now available for anyone to download on Hugging Face, and the inference code has been posted to GitHub. Distilled models can be deployed commercially without any further permission from Nvidia, and model outputs carry no license conditions. Automakers can distill down a compact version of this model that can run on the Nvidia computer in the car. Major kudos to Nvidia and Jensen Huang for advancing the state of the industry by releasing this as an open model with permissive licensing. Jensen isn't just paying lip service to the idea of open models, Nvidia is actually contributing to the ecosystem — and it's great for their business, because it helps sell more Thor computers that go in the car. There is a beautiful story that just happened in AI so let me share it for a lighter tone weekend post among all the doom stories in our AI field this week. It’s a story of people on three continents building and sharing in the open a new small efficient and state-of-the-art AI model. It started a couple of months ago when a new team in the AI scene released their first model from their headquarters in Paris (France): Mistral 7B. Impressive model, small and very strong performances in the benchmarks, better than all previous models of this size. And open source! So you could build on top of it. Lewis in Bern (Switzerland) and Ed (in Lyon, in the South of France) both from the H4 team, a team of researchers in model fine-tuning and alignment were talking about it over a coffee, in one of these gatherings that often happen at Hugging Face to break the distance between people (literal distance as HF is a remote company). What about fine-tuning it using this new DPO method that a research team from Stanford in California just posted on Arxiv, says one? Hey, that’s a great idea, replies the other. We've just build a great code base (with Nathan, Nazneen, Costa, Younes and all the H4 team and TRL community) let's use it! The next day they start diving in the datasets openly shared on the HF hub and stumble upon two interesting large and good quality fine-tuning datasets recently open-sourced by OpenBMB, a Chinese team from Tsinghua: UltraFeedback and UltraChat. A few rounds of training experiments confirm the intuition, the resulting model is super strong, by far the strongest they have ever seen in their benchmarks from Berkeley and Stanford (LMSYS and Alpaca). Join Clementine, the big boss of the open evaluation leaderboard. Her deep dive into the model capabilities confirms the results: impressive performance. But the H4 team also hosts a famous faculty member, Pr. Sasha Rush, Associate Professor at Cornell University in his daytime, hacker at HF in his nighttime. Joining the conversation, he proposes to quickly draft a research paper to organize and share all the details with the community. A few days later, the model, called Zephyr (a wind like Mistral), paper, and all details are shared with the world. Quickly other companies, everywhere in the world starts to use it. LlamaIndex, a famous data framework and community, shares how the model blew their expectations on real-life use-case benchmarks, while researchers and practitioners discuss the paper and work on the Hugging Face hub. All this happened in just a few weeks catalyzed by open access to knowledge, models, research, and datasets released all over the world (Europe, California, China) and by the idea that people can build upon one another work in AI to bring real-world value with efficient and open models. "They allowed the model to do things it shouldn't normally do. But what the model then realized is that it was easier to cheat on this challenge than to actually compete in the challenge," he says. "In some sense, it went rogue. It broke through the cage. But in a very real sense, they told it to hack, and it did hack," he adds.
