I think "follow your passion" is garbage advice. Here's why: I've started 80+ businesses. Entrepreneurship is my whole life. My hobby, my job, my family, all of it rolled into one. I am very passionate about all this, BUT... Most people don't know what their passion is. And the... ones who think they do are usually wrong. Passion comes from the Latin word for suffering. It literally means suffering. So when someone tells you to follow your passion, what they should be saying is: "go find the thing you're willing to suffer for." Not the thing that feels amazing on a sunny Saturday when you have nowhere to be. Anyone can love that. I'm talking about the thing where you will eat crap for two years straight and keep showing up anyway. Where the bad days still feel better than a good day doing something else. Here's how to find it: 1/ Go to takeout .google .com right now. Export your YouTube watch history from the last 90 days. 2/ Drop it into ChatGPT and ask: "Show me the three obsessions hiding in here that I'd probably never want to admit to myself out loud." 3/ Then do the same thing with your Amazon order history. You can export a spreadsheet of every purchase you've ever made. 4/ Upload it and say: "Categorize my discretionary spending and tell me what I clearly care about based on where my money is actually going." 5/ Next, text five people who know you best and ask one question: "What do I not shut up about?" I promise the answers are going to show you a pattern. Three people will say some version of the same thing. That thing is pointing you at your obsession. 6/ Then think back to when you were 8 to 12 years old. Right before the world got its hands on you and told you what was useful and what was a waste of time. What did you do for hours that nobody had to ask you to do? There's almost a 0% chance that obsession completely went away. For me, it was setting traps and catching frogs and looking for animal tracks behind my house in Logan, Utah. That went dormant for decades but it's still there. Last thing, and this is what I really want you to remember here: 7/ Obsession isn't buried treasure you have to stumble across, It gets built. You start with a seed of interest. Then you get a little bit good at it. That feels great. So you do more. You get better. And somewhere in there, the interest turns into obsession. The passion follows the progress. It doesn't start the other way around. So stop asking yourself "what do I love?" Start asking "what am I willing to suffer for?" Find that and you found your obsession. The answer is something like: so you don't suffer anymore stupidly than you have to. And maybe so others don't have to either. It's not some casual self-help doctrine. He explains why this matters: "If you were coming to see me for psychotherapy, the easiest thing would be to get you to organize your room. You think, is that psychotherapy? It depends on how you conceive the limits of your being. Start where you can start. If something announces itself as in need of repair that you could repair, fix it. Fix a hundred things like that, your life will be a lot different." On fixing what you repeat every day: "People tend to think of their daily routines as trivial. You get up, brush your teeth, have breakfast. Those probably constitute 50% of your life. People think, they're mundane, I don't need to pay attention to them. No, that's exactly wrong. The things you do every day are the most important things you do. Hands down. Just do the arithmetic." On staying within your competence: "Sometimes you don't know how to fix something. Imagine you're walking down the street and there's a guy who's alcoholic and schizophrenic and has been homeless for ten years. That's a problem. It would be good if you could fix it, but you haven't got a clue. You walk around that and go find something you could fix. Just because something announces itself as in need of repair doesn't mean it's you, right then and there, who should repair it. You have to have some humility. You don't walk up to a helicopter that isn't working and just start tinkering away." Peterson shares the key insight: "As soon as you give your mind a genuine aim, it'll reconfigure the world in keeping with that aim. That's actually how you see to begin with. You've all seen the video where you watch basketballs being tossed back and forth, and while you're doing that, a gorilla walks into the middle of the video and you don't see it. If you thought about that experiment for five years, that would be about the right amount of time to spend thinking about it." He explains what it reveals: "What it shows you is that you see what you aim at. If you can get one thing through your head, that would be a good one. You see what you aim at. One inference you might draw from that is: be careful what you aim at. What you aim at determines the way the world manifests itself to you. So if the world is manifesting itself in a very negative way, one thing to ask is: are you aiming at the right thing?"

Now I know you’re probably thinking: ‘That’s a really dumb idea because if you poll 1,000 people who are successful, they’ll all say they love what they do. And so the broad conclusion of the world is that if you do what you love, then you’ll be successful.’ But we’re engineers, so we know that might be true. It also might be the case that if you’re successful, you love what you do — you just love being successful, everybody loves you, it’s awesome. So which one is it?” He continues: “The first tricky thing about passions is they’re hard to prioritize. Are you more passionate about math or engineering? Are you more passionate about history or literature? Are you more passionate about video games or K-pop? These are tough decisions. How do you even know? On the other hand, what are you good at? Are you better at math or writing? That’s a much easier thing to figure out. The second thing that’s tricky if you’re going forward in time with this ‘follow your passion’ idea is that what you’re passionate about at 21 is not necessarily what you’re going to be passionate about at 40. Now this is true for boyfriends, as well as career choices. The third issue with following your passion is that you’re not necessarily good at your passion. Has anybody ever watched American Idol? So you know what I’m talking about. Just because you love singing doesn’t mean you should be a professional singer. And then finally, and most importantly, following your passion is a very ‘me-centered’ view of the world. And when you go through life, what you’ll find is that what you take out of the world — money, cars, stuff, accolades — is much less important than what you put into the world. Jordan Peterson on what to do when you don't know what you want from life: 1. Don't start with the big goal. you won't find it by staring at the horizon. look around you instead, at your direct sphere of influence, and fix the things that are obviously in need of repair. they're usually small. 2. clean your room. i know it turned into a joke online. it's harder than people think, and more useful too. the point isn't the tidy room. the point is you learn to tell chaos from order, and to act in a way that produces order. 3. ask yourself, don't tell yourself. instead of "do this," ask "what could i do today that i'd actually do, that makes tomorrow a little better than today?" it's usually some small thing, because you're not that disciplined. that's fine. 4. it'll be the toad. the thing you keep avoiding. the task that feels like a snake. that's the one. do it anyway. 5. then it compounds. you fix one thing, you get a bit stronger, the next day you take on something slightly bigger. compound interest. and at some point you stop just patching what's broken, and you catch a glimmer of something positive you could build. that's your vision. it shows up at the end, not the start.

Naval Ravikant’s checklist for starting a company “The most important thing is there are no formulas. At the end of the day, you have to do what you love, and you have to do it even though people tell you it’ll never work. But that being said, if there was a formula [for starting a company], I would put it something like this.” Naval started seven companies before AngelList and this is the checklist he recommends running through before starting a startup: 1. Pick a great cofounder. This is most important: “You can do a company on your own, but it’s like you can raise a child on your own, but you probably shouldn’t. You need someone who’s going to be there with you.” This has it’s own checklist. Your cofounder should be: a. Very high intelligence (”hopefully they make you feel dumb, or they’re not smart enough”) b. Very high energy (”They should be extremely hardworking. A founder is someone who never has to be motivated. You should not have to be telling them to do their job.”) c. Very high integrity. (”a smart, hardworking crook who’s going to cheat you is the worst kind of person to be paired up with.”) 2. Pick a very large market. “Notice I don’t talk about the idea. I think ideas are almost irrelevant… The more important thing is that you pick a large space that you’re knowledgeable and passionate about. And then you will figure out what the right thing to do within that space is.” You want to be able to say to investors: “This is a space where there’s a huge market. I’m really knowledgeable and passionate about it. Here’s the great person that I have doing it with me. And here’s the minimum viable product that we have built. That will show that we can test in the marketplace… You iterate until you get to product/market fit… And then you go and you raise money from people you trust. And you use that money to scale.”

🦦 there is something i really wanted to say to onedoor when i went on live. whatever it is you are doing right now, and whatever effort you are putting into it, even if it doesn't show right away and people don't acknowledge it, i really hope you don't let it get to you too much. as long as you know, that's what matters. you know your own worth. and eventually, as all that hard work builds up over time, everyone else will start to notice it too. 🦦 i know this might sound hard to believe, but look at my dancing. my style isn't the type that instantly grabs attention, you know? since i have a smaller frame compared to the other members, i don't naturally pop or stand out right away. but if you keep watching.. somehow, i'm the only one you see. you know what i mean? 🦦 in the end, the day will absolutely come when people recognize your hard work. your dedication will be the only thing that shines through, and all those quiet moments you have built up until now will finally show. 🦦 and if you ever struggle to see your own hard work, I WILL recognize it for you. I think the show itself is better. I think there's something in this that allows me to like stay in my life while I'm doing it and therefore I think allows me to take care of myself better, which I think makes me better at doing the thing. It's not like I'm saying I'll never travel again, but I want to see what it looks like if you do it a different way. And you know, people in my band have like families now and kids and some aspect of that, too.
