I think I might need a more powerful computer...my M1 Macbook Air with its external SSD just ain't cutting it. Been generating frames for this new animation nonstop for the past 3 days and I've only made it through the first 5 years of #Bitcoin data...about 11 more to... show more

Your next W? A fresh gaming PC. Don’t lose out. 🎮🔥

1) Thank you for all your amazing animations! 2) Don't spend any sats...we have low time preference for your amazing animations, my friend! 😝

It'd be nice to be able to have a faster turnover and be able to push the limits of what's possible even further.

Have you considered spinning up a beefy cloud vm to offload some of the work?

I've thought about it but most of the time it's not worth it. Most of my animations can run from start to finish in a few hours and then once I've got all the frames up to date, making the new ones each day only takes seconds/minutes.

VERY good sound track choice!

I’m still waiting for the M4 MacBook Air or pro too 😜

Yup, that's my thought too...and by then hopefully they'll be at least 50% cheaper in terms of #bitcoin.

Trade up. M3 Max Macbook Pro way to go.

The M4 should be coming out later this year/early next year so I think I'm going to wait for that.

Can’t fault M3 for power. And I work it hard. But I guess there’s always a new one coming with Apple 🤣

M4 MacBook Pros are coming very soon. P.S. Thanks for all the cool animations! ❤️ Cheers. 🍻

Yup, I'm thinking of just getting the fully loaded one once it comes out, financing it, with the hope that it ends up costing a hell of a lot less in terms of #bitcoin by the time it's fully paid off. Would be dope to have a full archival node on it and be able to pull the data directly from it too. That's the ultimate goal. Reduce my reliance on other people's APIs.

@KylePLeBlanc You can get far more power per dollar with a desktop pc

@KylePLeBlanc No doubt...I need it to be mobile though for when I work remote.

@KylePLeBlanc What if you had a powerhouse rendering machine at home that you can connect to remotely from your current laptop? Kind of like a personal cloud machine

@w_s_bitcoin At that point you might as well get a 16 inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip, literally a mobile powerhouse. 👍

@w_s_bitcoin That doesn't exist yet. You'll simply never get better price/performance out of a laptop. Desktop PC yo can upgrade RAM or swap out for a newer GPU in a few years in you want, or TWO GPUs. Its not debatable and its not even close, but depends what you really want I guess

@w_s_bitcoin The M4 Max MacBook Pros will be out in a few short weeks tops. The M3 Max smokes most desktop CPUs on both single core and multi core performance and the M4 Max is only going to be even better. Also, I wouldn’t want to upgrade RAM or GPUs for a Bitcoin archival full node.

How about binary leading zeros for the x-axis?

Just multiply the numbers you see here by 4x. 😉 2^4 = 16

I think your computer is fine and you need more efficient code

There might be some things I could make more efficient but these data sets and animated features (e.g. dynamic coloring and transparency of dots depending on a handful of variables) are beasts.

post the code?

or…

Why you teasing us like that?😟😉🤣

I couldn't wait another week or two to let ya'll see what I'm working on...it's fun to watch, isn't it? 😃

Every animation you do is fun to watch. Not sure how you think of all these different ways to look at #Bitcoin history, but I for one, find them fascinating. Thank you very much for doing them. 🙏

The OWC Express 1M2 is currently the fastest SSD available if drive speed is your bottleneck. It will basically match your internal.

Jesus, you've been doing all of these off that? Impressive, truly.

M4 Mac Mini right around the corner bro

And the next 11 years will have way more transactions/year so it will get slower and slower.

How much RAM do you have now?

8GB

Ok that's why.. I got 16GB, never any problems.

Vibing all the way to my 2 week notice. Doing the hash dash smash bash.

You can do it!

Build one

Time to build yourself a beefy PC. $1500 will get you a nice PC that'll do all the animations you want.

🧡 the animation, but you need faster processor. 🤷♀️

Can you enlist other folks such as myself to render frames for you?

Unfortunately no...for this animation, each frame is interdependent on the output from the previous frame so they have to be generated in succession.

Your sponsors should step in. Tell them now

They're contributing more than enough to the cause...I'm just not willing to cough up the sats for a new computer just yet. Maybe I will sometime next year.

@saylor @Eric_BIGfund please support @w_s_bitcoin with new computer hardware so he can make bitcoin charts great again

Can you see that SSD read is really the bottleneck here? I can imagine so, too, but is there potential for optimization in the script itself?

Yeah, that's probably the biggest bottleneck tbh. The scripts themselves are pretty optimized...although I'm sure there could be ways to optimize them further.

@mrldotsh Render the whole thing in 1 massive image, and pick subframes and scale accordingly?

@mrldotsh That'd probably freeze my computer since each individual frame is in 4K and all of them together would be a crazy huge file lol. Plus each frame is interdependent on the output from the previous frame so they have to be generated in succession.

@mrldotsh A single 4k frame is 6MB. It needs about 4x in width, and maybe 8x height, guestimate? It can be monochrome, as it's only one color. So I don't think it needs that much ram.

@mrldotsh To be clear, it's only about pre-rendering the point cloud, and cutting frames out of that. Assuming that's the bottleneck. But the sheer volume of writing all the frames might also be a lot.

@mrldotsh Yeah, it's the sheer number in this case...rendering about 35k frames in total for this one.

@mutatrum Hold on, when you say SSD is the bottleneck, do you talk about reading data from SSD to process or writing images to SSD?

What's the brand of the graphics card? Can't you use its hardware acceleration?

Time to dig that rabbit hole. As you know graphics cards are much more efficient doing some tasks like video encoding. Nvidia has CUDA for example.

We can wait 💪🏽. Keep up with your amazing work !! Much appreciated. #lowtimepreference

External usb drives are notoriously bad at syncing and processing blockchain data

This is awesome! Interesting that the record setting block typically remains at about 4 more leading zeros than the required threshold. Which I believe is about 65,000x more difficult than necessary.

Yeah, this data's fascinating and very insightful. Can't wait to post the complete animation in 4K over on YouTube...should be ready in about a week or two.

Nice congruence between looks & sound. Painful to see MH hashrates.

Google colab

great job!
