For decades the Coalition ran fiscally responsible budgets, keeping expenditure within reasonable limits to avoid borrowing and paying interest to lenders. Then Labor chanted “It’s Time!” and came into Government like a teenager with access to dad’s bank book. Spent as much as possible on all its visionary ideas without plans or parameters. (Visions were good but implementation was disastrously optimistic and reckless). The Dismissal stopped the party and the Coalition had to pare back many of the extremely generous measures to get the budget back in the black. They were considered to be mean, taking away gold-plated benefits that were costly and open to fraud, like Medicare fraud, now NDIS fraud. Except for Hawk-Keating, Labor has repeatedly overspent to win votes. The Coalition has worked to bring back a surplus to avoid paying interest. It’s like paying off the monthly balance on a credit card instead of just the minimum amount due. Each time they cut some open-ended benefit or scheme, it was bemoaned by people who didn’t care if it was affordable. The Covid lockdown wrecked the Coalition’s system, and the government gave in to the vote buying scheme because the voters didn’t care about the extra interest we paid for a big deficit. Until it hit them. Only one party has tried to hold the line of common sense and reason based policies. One Nation. The candidates may not be charismatic but the policies are realistic. The next election will determine whether Australia can rebound and rebuild or succumb to authoritarian rule for the next generations.
