I think this is my favorite one so far

Uses small gas engines and props to produce the spin. Still not really sure how it's controlled though. Tension lines also adjust pitch of larger blades? Actuator inside the CF spars? Adjusting pitch of the whole gas motor slightly? Dunno! Neat though

(slaps forehead) why didn't i submit this

Subtle. You don’t need a tail if there is no body to balance. Both retarded and genius, my favorite kind of solution.

Ceiling fan

When you realize not a single one of these devices could ever be used on the battlefield, this was massive waste of taxpayer money and inventor time. @SecWar

@SecWar Yeah man who could ever foresee these terrible inventions someday being useful? What a waste of money and time

I keep waiting for the mass production EVA to show up and throw it's hat in the ring for this prize.

its def my favorite tv show

Is DARPA asking for self-transporting wind turbines?

>long range fast attack balloons There is but one clear winner, and it shall be called the future

Feels like the rest of the craft clipped out of reality. Wild.

At first I thought you were joking and it was a rotor blade that detached from the body 😂

certified thingamabob

Where is that video from ? Hard to tell if something is fake or real these days.

DARPA Lift challenge! August 5th stream, near the end at this timestamp: Lots more designs on the channel being tested, fun to skim through!

Thank you, that is indeed an unexpected design. If it works aerodynamically, why not ? This is what DARPA challenges are all about, pushing boundaries.

it's so whimsical

Proudly built in Neenah, Wisconsin

Curtiss-Bleecker makes a comeback …

I love seeing innovative engineering but this one just cracks me up as it looks like a ceiling fan that escaped detainment.

Can someone tell me what we can't just put a battery and gyro on a ceiling fan from costco

コンベアXFY-1 ポゴ(Pogo) ?

Is that vertical rod the payload?

In that clip they were testing un-loaded, but yeah the payload attaches to the bottom of the rod. Here it is with some weights added

Cool i was wondering how they even induce rotation but it looks like each “prop blade” actually has its own motor and sub-prop(?) to pull the larger blades around. At first i thought they were using the mass of the central rod and a single motor at the top hub

And it flew so many times! Glorious ceiling fan

Its had a lot of airtime this week!

Brilliant use of natural physics

This is what happens when the eject button is mislabeled and the cockpit drops off. The rotor keeps going for a while.. 😅🌀

Here we go DARPA you’ve been inspired now run with it

Give them rockets an extra propeller for a smoother landing

Used spin toy version of that design. Just a flying set of blades "on-a-stick"! IYGMM

Reminds me of a falling whirlybird from a tree

wtf

I don’t know much about aerospace engineering but it’s kinda fun that one team thought “What if our drone looked like the rotors flew off a helicopter”.

The rotary wing designs show the least delivery, but the most promise.

Oh no! Someone ceiling fan has escaped!

This one is super cool indeed ! We need 2 of them attached like a Russian copter, would be awesome.
