It is something I already knew as accurate history, both to Native Americans and Puerto Ricans. Taínos (native people of Puerto Rico) actually were living in what we know as Florida pre Columbus “discovery” of the Americas. So technically Taínos are part of the Native American history as well.

I learned about this several years ago. It was a part of the larger Eugenics programs started by the US Government in the 1800s. They started with the Native American women and then moved to all women of color. Then they targeted all women in the lower classes. Then they added all women who were mentally or physically handicapped. In 1932 a women in Virginia with Down Syndrome wanted to have a baby but the government didn't want her to. They were going to forcibly sterilize her. Her mother intervened and found an attorney to stop it. The problem is that the attorney was working against her and was put in place to take the case all the way to the Supreme Court where the case would loose. That happened and set precident in the US that it was legal for the government to forcibly sterilize women. The Nazis took that ball and ran with it. Then in the 50's they went after the women in Puerto Rico.
