I think we should look at the Vatican/SSPX relationship like a father/son relationship. A good father would extend mercy and listen closely to the pleas of his son, including his son's criticisms, even if (especially if!) he thinks his son is wayward.

At his wits' end on what to do, the father decided to draw circles around his child's eyes while he was sleeping. When the child woke up, the father claimed the dark circles were caused by the child's time on his tablet and that if he continued, he would go blind. This sparks a serious debate. Did this father go too far to save his son, or could he have just gotten rid of the tablet? Where do you draw the line in parenting? If it's me, I'm just going to get rid of the tablet altogether.
