We have been unequivocally clear that Canada should accept ICC jurisdiction and the decision of the International Criminal Court. While we note the comments of the Foreign Affairs minister in recognizing the ICC’s independence, we are deeply disappointed that the Canadian government did not directly state clearly that criminals like Netanyahu must face justice for their crimes, including at the ICC. To the facetious argument about moral equivalence: a dead Palestinian child should be equal to any other child. Those responsible for any human rights violations should face a court. This should not be difficult to understand.

Today, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant in relation to the war in Gaza. We and many others have urged the government for months to do the right thing and abide by the ruling of the ICC. Today, the Prime Minister did that in accepting that Canada would recognize the arrest warrants. That means, in theory, that Netanyahu and Gallant could be arrested if they stepped foot in Canada. This is an important moment. Canada has chosen to do the right thing. International law and a rules-based international order is important - today, a signal has been sent that no one is above the law.
