I voted against the Immigration & Asylum Bill last night. Forcing asylum seekers to pay £10,000 for safety and shelter is punitive. Asylum is a legal right, not something we should charge for. The Government is heading down the same failed path as the last Tory administration.

We are paying Rwanda over £150 million to take 100 asylum seekers. And the agreement also means we take up to 100 asylum seekers from Rwanda. So we aren't shifting the problem away, we're moving asylum seekers around like a game, all the while to appease people who want the UK to crackdown on asylum seekers, while keeping the total number of asylum seekers in the UK the same. If you think the Rwanda sceheme is fixing the asylum seeking system or backlog? Think again. The government thinks you're stupid. And if you believe their dog whistling, I suspect you probably are.

When 94% of Eritrean and 99% of Sudanese asylum seekers are ultimately granted refugee status, the government should establish safe and legal routes for these countries, or at the very least, fast-track their asylum applications. Student refugee visas and community-support/business-support schemes cannot be the only safe routes for refugees. We should not be offering asylum protection based on qualifications, but on the level of need for sanctuary. A person fleeing war is not more deserving of safety because they can “contribute” more.

ICE isn't targeting criminals. They’re arresting nonviolent, law-abiding mothers, fathers, and children, tearing families apart. Asylum is a legal path to immigration, but Trump is voiding asylum claims so masked ICE officers can meet mass deportation quotas. This is not the America I know and love.
