I don’t usually like to use Grok but here’s the explanation. When the goalkeeper moves up he’s becomes the second last defender. So in the position here the last defender becomes the “goalie” in the offside position and the goalie is the second defender. So if he is passed the second defender which is the goalie he’s off sides.

Let me explain. This is an off side position because the Iranian players foot is in front of the the second-last opponent. I see some comments that Iranian player is behind that second-last opponent, but I draw the lines so you can easily see this was not a case.

The offside rule is flawed. it should be changed to require only some part of the body to be behind the last defender, such as the foot. The NHL made this change and it works fantastic.

It’s clearly offsides. People need to stop whining and learn the rules. It’s a total shame for that goal to be taken away, but the rule is clear, and he was indeed offsides. FIFA needs to change the rule so that it’s not offsides if the foremost offensive player is behind the back-most non-goalie defender. But, the rule is such that the offensive player is offsides if he is not behind the two back-most defensive players, goalie or not. This creates a situation where the goalie could be outside of the box and you have two defensive players struggling to defend, and the offensive player is called offsides just as he was in the scenario last night, and it ends up costing a team a beautiful goal and at least half the fans a beautiful moment.
