Thermal engine cycle is a part of that answer. Closest thing to Space F35 possibly in the next decade. It will be proven out within the next 2 years then a cascade of competitors will emerge. Thermal engine gets huge delta v advantage plus mass reusability and manufacturability do its few moving parts.

For a single stage, you’re going to get a lot more delta-v out of methalox or kerolox due to the higher density and far better mass ratio. & it is literally 100 times harder (in terms of cryocooler input power) to keep 1 ton of H2 liquid than 1t of CH4.

@pronounced_kyle @OrbitalOps_ Plenty to dig into here on the advances @OrbitalOps_ has done with the cryo tech, but that delta-v statement is wild. If that was the case then you should let Blue, Stoke, ULA, and the SLS guys know they picked the wrong propellant.

@pronounced_kyle @OrbitalOps_ @grok, Compare the upper stage delta-v of New Glenn and Falcon 9 (Block 5) and Atlas V with no payload. Just the upper stage itself, not full launch vehicle. Use the estimated dry and wet masses and Isps of each stage and the rocket equation.

Falcon 9 Block 5 upper stage (no payload): ~3,900 kg dry, 92,670 kg propellant (kerolox), Isp 348 s vac. Delta-v = 348 × 9.81 × ln(96,570/3,900) ≈ 10,955 m/s. Atlas V Centaur: ~2,026 kg dry, 20,799 kg propellant (hydrolox), Isp 451 s. Delta-v ≈ 10,712 m/s. New Glenn upper (est.): ~17,500 kg dry, 175,000 kg propellant (hydrolox), Isp 445 s. Delta-v ≈ 10,467 m/s. Kerolox wins on mass ratio for upper stage alone.

Imma be real, I don't think this is a good precedent to set. It's been nice that space and Antarctica have been neutral land, I don't think braaking that precedent without provocation makes space exploration any better or safer for everyone.

What are the existing primes not doing, or doing incorrectly, on the topic of space warfighting? What would make a new co an attractive investment vs. say getting in on one of the various RG-XX entrants' cap table? Honest question.

25 years from now, if you look at the most successful space companies, I bet some will be founded 2026 or later. :) The industry is changing, tech is changing, orders of magnitude more objects are being deployed to orbit, new launchers are spinning up... tons of opportunity.
