#TrialByJury The leader of the North Eastern Circuit, Caroline Goodwin KC, has just given the Justice Minister a reality check on Labour’s plans to limit jury trials to deal with the court backlog. You don’t solve a backlog by removing one of the oldest safeguards of liberty in this country. Trial by jury is not an administrative inconvenience. It is a protection against the power of the state. Create the chaos to present the solution. Labour is exacerbating the issue and then presenting the solution, and the solution always seems to involve less liberty, more state power, and fewer protections for the individual. Limit jury trials, and what you move towards are Diplock-style courts, trials decided by a single judge without a jury. We have been down that road before, and it was never meant to be normal justice. This country fought for jury trials. They are not a bureaucratic problem to be managed away. Be very careful when governments start talking about “efficiency” in the justice system. Efficiency for the state often means fewer rights for the people.

When Sammy Gyamfi was Communications Officer, he held Ministers accountable day and night. Today, he is running from accountability himself. It has become clear that the Majority Leadership planned to have the Finance Minister appear before Parliament to answer questions meant for the CEO of GOLDBOD. This is a deliberate attempt to shield the CEO from direct accountability. If he has nothing to hide, Sammy Gyamfi must appear before Parliament to answer questions on Goldbod transactions, the IMF report, and the losses. Ghanaians deserve answers from the right person. Not proxies.

I’m tired of being told to “move on.” As Americans, we have every right to demand answers about what the government has lied about and I’m not going to stop asking because it makes people uncomfortable. An American ought to be able to answer an FBI agent’s questions and trust that their report says exactly what was discussed. Anyone who deliberately falsifies that record puts a person’s freedom at risk, betrays the American people, and disgraces the agents who do their jobs honestly. Enough talk about accountability! If someone broke the law, hold them responsible. I don’t care how high they climbed, who their friends are, or whether they’ve retired. They still have to answer for what they did. And NO, I won’t let this go. Americans deserve a government they can trust.

The Labour Government have put our defence, safety and security at risk by surrendering the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands. Labour cannot answer simple questions about their plans, including the costs and the long term future of our base at Diego Garcia. In an uncertain and dangerous world, the Chagos Islands are a key strategic asset for us and it's reckless and irresponsible of Labour to compromise them. With a new Government elected in Mauritius and a new President elected in the USA, Ministers must review these plans.
