Something that has knocked me for six is the fact that the hostages have only become stronger in their Judaism. Holding on to being a Jew. Even in the darkest most terrifying times. Rom Bravslevski refused to convert to Islam in captivity, even when offered food when he was starving as a treat if he read the Quran. His reply was ‘I am a strong Jew’. On coming out he laid tefillin.. an ancient morning ritual. Former hostage Eli Sharabi, who was not a religious Jew, recited the Shema prayer for the first time whilst in captivity and held on to scraps of stale pita bread and drops of water just to be able to make the holy Friday night shabbat kiddush prayers. Omer Shem Tov had conversations with G-d and tried to also observe shabbat traditions. Their faith helped to get them through. Thank you prayers to G-d have been recited on site of families reuniting with their returned loved ones… Taken for being a Jew. Tortured and starved for being a Jew. Hamas hostage survivor Omer Shem Tov recalls how he found a small card with Psalm 20 on it, some 100 days into captivity, and how his faith in God gave him the strength to stay alive. “‘Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will trust in the name of the Lord our God.’ I didn't know it then, but while I was whispering those words in Gaza, my mother was reciting the same psalm in my bedroom in Israel, praying for my return. The psalm continues, ‘Lord, answer us when we call.’ God answered us.”
