Compassion story: This is KOKO the Gorilla, which most people have heard of, the gorilla who can speak about 1000 words in sign language, and understand about 2000 in English. What most people don't know, however is that Koko was an avid Mister Roger's Neighborhood fan. When Fred Rogers took a trip out to meet Koko for his show, not only did she immediately wrap her arms around him and embrace him, she did what she'd always seen him do onscreen, she proceeded to take his shoes off. Such a moment not to be missed.

Gorillas are fascinating creatures that are part of the primate family. They are the largest living primates and are known for their impressive strength, social intelligence, and complex family structures. There are two species of gorillas: the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla. The eastern gorilla is divided into two subspecies: the mountain gorilla and the Grauer's gorilla. The western gorilla is also divided into two subspecies: the western lowland gorilla and the Cross River gorilla. Gorillas are primarily herbivores, feeding on leaves, shoots, roots, vines, and fruits. They play a key role in maintaining the biodiversity of their forest homes by spreading the seeds of the trees they eat and by opening up gaps in the trees as they move around, letting in light and helping sun-loving plants grow. Gorillas live in groups called troops, which usually consist of one dominant male, several females, and their offspring. The dominant male, known as a silverback, is the leader of the troop and makes all the decisions. Gorillas are generally calm and nonaggressive unless they are disturbed. Gorillas share 98.3% of their genetic code with humans, making them our closest cousins after chimpanzees and bonobos. They are highly intelligent and have been observed using tools, such as sticks, to help them gather food. Unfortunately, all species (and subspecies) of gorilla are currently listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat destruction, poaching for the bushmeat and wildlife trade, and disease. Conservation efforts are in place to protect these gentle giants and their habitats.
