"In the interests of both our countries". This is highly debatable. Other than the monetary gains of globalism, dependence on an authoritarian, far larger country doesn't help the Australian nation in the slightest. But the money comes first. Australians need nationalism.

As I recall, Kissinger noted that U.S. relations with Beijing and Moscow should be better than relations between Beijing and Moscow. This logic of setting countries against each other, practiced by the United States and other Western states, is well known and still in use today. It is neither our approach nor that of China.

I find it really sad that the Greek Australian and Italian Australian communities are basically being lost to history. It’s a bit like the story of the Sopranos which tells the story of the Italian Americans dying out. In just the past 5 years more migrants to Australia have arrived from India and China than all Greeks and Italian migrants to Australia in the past 100 years. That’s a pretty crazy stat. The volumes are just completely different. We had a huge contribution to Australian culture but I fear it will be really diluted and lost over the next 50 years.
