Ebert is my guy. He was also down af ✊🏾 however… The Wayans presence highlighted the generational divide in comedy. My generation loved it but my grandmother thought stuff like The Wayans Bros, Don’t Be A Menace and In Living Color was Amos n’ Andy level of buffoonery.

I can see both sides of the argument tbh. Scary Movie and White Chicks are my favorite Wayans movies but I can't argue that is buffoonery. Menace gets a pass for me because it is atleast calling out the negative stereotypes in hood movies.

Siskel was such a prude about so many things, and then he would just drop these banger takes out of nowhere

I'm on Ebert's side all the way. Not because of this, but because Siskel thought the Terminator was from another planet that came to Earth to kill Sarah Conner. This means, when he's in that theater, he's not paying attention. He had NO idea what was going on.

I always thought Gene was better at seeing movies for what they are. While Roger was out here trying to hold Spaceballs to the same standard as Citizen Kane. I loved them both but I trusted Gene's opinion more on comedies/satire.

Agreed. Tho I do agree with his last statement. Especially these days. Certain people would take it too personally.

Woody Allen made fun of Jews (and Jewish stereotypes) pretty much non-stop.

Jews have made that movie at least a half dozen times. I don't think people even realize they are making fun of Jews those movies.

Ebert has a point. The movies it's satirizing were part of an effort to de-stereotype Black life in urban poverty. You can make a comedy full of stereotypes if you want, but dont pretend it's a smart parody of those films. It's just the Wayans having fun.

I think I usually preferred Siskel's takes back in the day.
