I will never forget this: Some Black Americans questioned Kamala Harris's cultural identity throughout her political career. The critique centered on her not growing up in a traditional Black American experience - her mother was Indian, her father Jamaican, although she did attend an HBCU and join a black... sorority, and some felt she leaned into her identity selectively during election seasons. That tension was real and ran deep in certain corners of Black political conversation. Then Bruce Fischer walked into that room. He saw no Indian heritage. He saw no "is she Black enough" debate. He saw no nuance. He saw a Black woman holding power, and his entire body recoiled from it. The stuffed hand in the pocket, the averted eyes, the stiff posture - his body told the full truth of how he saw her. That moment collapsed the entire internal debate in one second. Racism operates on perception, and white supremacy has never required a purity test. It sees Blackness and responds to it. The same communities that debated her Blackness never had to convince Bruce Fischer of anything - he had already made his assessment. This is a truth Black people have lived for generations. Mixed heritage, success, education, and titles change nothing in the eyes of those who carry that kind of contempt. The office of Vice President of the United States stood in front of him, and all he processed was a Black woman.
