She was told her face would be punched, her teeth broken, and that she would be choked if she screamed in pain. When her husband tried to comfort her by holding her hand, his mother ordered him to let go and he did, leaving her to endure the pain alone. Whilst the Vice President sought permission from the Committee Chair to leave the proceedings having stood her ground in making clear she was not to participate, the rest of her men and women had to stay for the hearing to carry on. Was it a leader abandoning her subordinates where it mattered most? Was it arrogance, or a necessary retreat?
