Had an interesting conversation this weekend with an older relative who's politics are "just be a good person". She's relatively wealthy and gives to the types of causes you would expect this type of person to give. She gives her time too. She is actually a good person. I asked her if she was ever concerned that the causes she gave to would reduce the proportion of people like her in the world. She said that she thought the opposite. That she was inspired by the generosity and kindness of others, and that by giving she would increase the proportion of people like her. I said I believed she inspires her peers, but her peers aren't the people she's giving money to. Do they become productive and generous people, like her? Or is she just increasing the proportion of people who are takers and don't give anything back? Despite decades of generosity, this was clearly a question she had never thought about. The implications made her uncomfortable, and the conversation basically ended after that.

One look from her and you already understand. She will do anything to protect me. Anything. She lost her husband (my dad) when she was just around 31 or 32. Still very young. Still in her prime. Many people in that situation would have chosen to remarry and start another life. But she didn’t, She chose us. She used the rest of her youth just to raise us and make sure we were okay. Along the way, she sold almost everything she had worked for in her 20s, just so we wouldn’t suffer. I love her so much. ❤️

This morning I was prepping for a DIEP flap when an orthopedic surgeon sat down beside me and said, "You're not gonna believe what United just did." His patient had waited six months just to see him. He confirmed she needed a hip replacement and she was a good candidate. He submitted everything—her imaging, her full records, all the evidence. But United denied the case… because he didn’t include the radiographic findings in the body of his note. Not because she didn’t need the surgery. Not because the data wasn’t there. But because of a formatting technicality. Now she has to wait again, just long enough to age out of the plan and onto Medicare. It makes you wonder doesn’t it? How many decisions like this are about care? And how many are about cost?
