Filmmakers and friends Pip Bennett-Warner and Pippa Vosper have set to highlight the issue based on harrowing true stories depicting what some Black women have gone through in their new film 22+1. The NHS has launched a rapid investigation into maternity failings which the Secretary of State has pledged to enact. Please be aware this report does deal with the distressing topic of baby loss.

A system known as Martha's rule is being rolled out across every A&E department in England - allowing patients, their relatives and NHS staff to ask for a review of their care. The system is named after 13 year old Martha Mills, who died from sepsis in 2021. Her family's concerns about her treatment had been ignored - and the coroner ruled that she would probably have survived if she had been moved to intensive care earlier.

A Maternity Commissioner will not solve every problem in maternity care, but creating a powerful, independent voice - established in law - is a historic step forward. The Commissioner will champion mothers, babies and families, represent frontline staff and bring together charities, campaigners and professional organisations to make maternity care safer. For too long, families have had to fight to be heard, while frontline staff have not always been listened to or supported. This role must turn their experiences into action and ensure that uncomfortable truths can never again be ignored. This is deeply personal to me. I have listened to families whose lives have been changed forever, and promised that their courage and campaigning must lead to lasting change. A permanent voice. A statutory responsibility.
