I would really love to see middle and high schools bring back sewing classes. I really enjoyed learning to sew as a youngster. Here are some great sewing tips that you might want to bookmark and practice at home. I’m definitely going to review these stitches myself 🧵

Don’t judge me, but I know how to sew, nothing fancy and self taught, I sew like a man, if there’s a hole in my shorts I sew it up, and I don’t care what it looks like as long as the hole is closed lol.

I’m impressed. No judgement here. Good for you 💗

When I was in High School, boys took wood shop and the girls took Home economics. What happened? 🤔

Budget cuts came and some didn’t feel it was important enough to keep.

@Celtic_Harper I took home ec in junior high and high school and tgen tgere was a second level home ec 2 which included a half year of sewing and then home design . I loved it and I still see today . I am a hobbyist but enjoy historical sewing

@FarmGirlCarrie Cool! Me, I was into woodworking and in my retirement had a full blown wood shop. I build guitars mostly. I since turned my shop into an ADU and sold off most of my machines. Still work on guitars though! 😁

The public school system took out Home ec, child development, sewing, wood shop and independent consumer 👀 hmmm… and look what happened to society! Teach your kids life skills at home 🩷 (all learning should start at home anyway) 🩷

Yes 👍🏼

When I was in 9th grade, our auto mechanics class had too many students. Our Home Ec class had too few. 8 boys were randomly chosen to move to Home Ec. Today, I can sew on a button, mend a hole, and hem my pants. I can also perform maintenance on my car.

That’s wonderful!

I could sew by six years old. Probably learned knitting & anything else my mom did. She always had some kind of needles in her hands. Came in handy all my life. Especially upholstery repair on autos & furniture, but mostly my 48 Ford Coupe I revamped. $250 Flat Head 8

Home Economics was a requirement along with Shop class for every HS student in my generation. You were required to take as an elective.

Sewing, cooking, wood shop and metal shop were all requirements when I was in school. Long time ago I know but it was great.

Yes 👍🏼

@robertdunlap947 Seems they are eliminating creativity 😔My mother in law taught me some of these methods In her day they made most of their clothes Will soon be a lost art

@robertdunlap947 It’s sad Brenda.

When we were in school the girls took home ec and the boys took shop and a class called Bachelor Survival!! LOL. They learned to cook, sew, iron, all sorts of things to get them into adulthood… it worked!

These were simply life skills.

My son took a sewing class in high school. He made a quilt out of camo! Now in his 30s he still sews his own comicon and renn Faire costumes!

Good for him! 👏

Oh, I love this!😻 I'm not great at sewing, and I'm way too impatient, unlike my octogenarian home-seamstress mom! I so admire the handiwork of adroit "yesteryear" trades- and skills-holders!!! It is a joy to behold! 💃🌻

I think with a little patience some of these stitches could be well done 😉

They used to have Home Ec. Do they not have that anymore? I still remember taking Shop. I learned a lot about using tools such as tablesaws and how to use them safely. Both shop & Home Ec were extremely valuable.

I love to sew too! I’ve never seen these beaded stitches before. The first one would look great on a coaster or table runner.

I agree Anna. With a little patience and practice I’ll bet you’d get pretty good at it 😉

Boys and girls must learn how to hem their garments and stitch buttons on. I taught my sons how to, they say it is a life saver.

Excellent

I used to make all my suits for work in the 1980’s. Even lined the jackets. Why? I couldn’t afford what I wanted. So Vogue all the way! I need to pick this up again.

I just bought my kid beginner embroidery kits.

@CNforUSA My daughter in law took those classes, she can saw on a button 😂

@CNforUSA 😂💗

My 13 year old granddaughter saved up money and bought herself a new sewing machine, self taught and making her own patterns as well!

Wonderful to hear Mike. I was at Costco earlier this week and I saw a Singer sewing machine for sale. I think sewing may be making a comeback.

They don’t want knowing how to take care of ourself. They are working art, and music out of schools too. We need only 3 things to survive. How to find water, how to grow food, and how to build. None is taught in school. 🤔

One of my favorite classes! One of my boys started sewing in high school at home with my machine, then I got him his own! Sewing by hand is easier… the dang bobbin gets me every time! 🤣

Wonderful!

Home Economics should be brought back to every public school mandatory curriculum.

@SULLY10X We had Home Economics & Wood Shop in 8th grade. We didn’t learn these fancy stitches tho! 🤭

@SULLY10X I’ll bet with a little practice Gail, you would be very good at it 😉

@SULLY10X I appreciate your faith in me! 🤣

To this day , I still have the pieces I created in class.. a little top for a baby , an embroidered towel, a scarf with cross stitched penguins. I also had cooking classes : cremes caramel , brûlée, île flottante .

Totally agree. I was lucky enough to have a grandmother who taught me lots too. Today with women having careers etc they don’t have the same free time for hobbies. Those skills won’t be passed down👍🥰

My 14 year old granddaughter asked for a sewing machine for her birthday, I was thrilled!

It is a REALLY important cognitive skill and useful for life.

Agreed. Home economics. Never should have went away.

They make it look so easy. Great idea for winter activity.

Great idea Mary. Winter will be here before we know it. My husband and I were listening to Perry Como Christmas in the car today 😂

Agreed!

We had the Home Ec. class but the teacher was viciously mean, so I still can’t sew beyond fixing a button. I would love to learn! The Shop teacher was so much nicer. I supposed I should be much better at building bird houses!

recently lost 80 lbs, better eating habits, supplements. on SSA so don't have the $ for all new clothing. been sewing the waist bands on my fat pants smaller so they fit me again. I'm good with it ..

That would be awesome!! Been sewing since I was 8. My granny taught me how to make quilts but it was middle school Home Ec that taught me to make a teddy bear that was the beginning of my love for fabric art and design. I still sew even with one arm nerve damage on machine

Both of my daughters were cheerleaders, gymnast and dancers in their school years. Never spent an hour in the kitchen or making crafts. When they graduated from college, they both decided they wanted to learn to cook and sew. Holy Cow! Their work and food is so incredible. Me? I can’t sew on a button and I hate cooking.

@SaltyGoat17 My mother got plain disgusted with me when i would come home from School just raving about my Home ec teacher Mrs. Grigsby.

In school in England I learned embroidery and smocking and had lovely projects to take home. My friend who designs clothes for her own store tells me of women who come in because they cannot sew on a button!
