IBM has smashed through its put wall on the downside and that put wall hasn’t rolled lower. So what that means is the options landscape is not shifting down with the price. That’s important. Normally if there was going to be continuation to the downside you would expect this...

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos: “You call them lunatics but the president just had this post where he says ‘we’re in discussions with a new and more reasonable regime’ – let me try to pin you down on that, who is this ‘new and more reasonable regime’? Is the United States in direct contact with them?” State Secretary Marco Rubio: “I’m not going to disclose to you who those people are, because it probably would get them in trouble with some other groups of people inside of Iran. Look, there’s some fractures going on there internally. And at the end of the day, I think that if there are people in Iran who now, given everything that’s happened, are willing to move in a different direction for their country, that would be great. Imagine in Iran that instead of spending their wealth, billions of dollars supporting terrorists or weapons, had spent that money helping the people of Iran, you’d have a much different country.” “So we are always hopeful that that would exist over there. It’s unfortunate, the people of Iran are incredible people. The people who lead them, this clerical regime, that is the problem. And if there are new people now in charge who have a more reasonable vision of the future, that would be good news for us, for them, for the entire world. But we also have to be prepared for the possibility, maybe even the probability, that that is not the case. So we’re gonna test it.” George Stephanopoulos: “But the president said they are, is that the case or is it not? I’m just trying to get some clarity on that.” Marco Rubio: “So you have people that are saying some of the right things privately. Obviously, they’re not going to put it out in press releases and what they say to you or put out there for the world doesn’t necessarily reflect what they’re saying in our conversations.”

Jeff Bezos: “Focus on the controllable inputs to your business instead of the outputs” Jeff gives the example of companies trying to drive up their stock price by actually going out and trying to sell their stock: “[A higher stock price] is the final output…. That’s not going to be sustainable. It’s a silly approach.” Jeff recommends working backwards from a higher stock price to its controllable inputs instead: “What are the inputs to a higher stock price? Okay, well, free cash flow and return on invested capital are inputs to a higher stock price. Let’s keep working backwards. What are the inputs to free cash flow? And you keep working backwards until you get to something that’s controllable.” He points out that a controllable input to free cash flow would be something like a lower cost structure: “If we can improve our picking efficiency in our fulfillment centers and reduce defects - reducing defects at the root is one of the best ways to lower cost structure - that starts to be a job you would accept. If you’re a reasonable person, you would say, I have no idea how to drive up the stock price - I can’t manage that directly. It’s not a controllable input. But I can make your picking algorithms more efficient, and that will reduce cost structure. And then you follow that chain all along the way. That’s what you do in all of these businesses.” Video source: Business Insider (2014)

Marc Andreessen on how to get people to join your 3-person startup Marc says founders have two tools at their disposal to win new hires: 1) Stock options, and 2) vision. He explains: “The best entrepreneurs are really good at selling people on their company precisely because they can explain how the world is going to look in a way that is so compelling.” Marc points to Steve Jobs’s “reality distortion field” as the epitome of this: “If you get within 10 feet of Steve Jobs, whatever he says in the next 20 minutes, you’re going to walk out of there believing. He can say that the sky is purple, and you’re like yep that makes total sense . . . The best entrepreneurs all tend to have that in common and tend to be really good at that. It’s essentially sales — selling to employees. It’s an incredibly valuable skill to be able to do that. That plus stock options.” The other thing Marc has observed about hiring over the years is that right employees have to self-select into your company, even though that can be incredibly frustrating at times: “If you hired all the people you interviewed, it would turn out that 2/3rds or 3/4ths of them you probably shouldn’t have hired anyway. So what the best companies do is they provide a very stark idea of what the company is and what is it isn’t: ‘We are a company where people are expected to work 18 hour days and if you don’t like that, don’t come here’ or ‘We are a company where people expect to go home at 5pm every day and if you think that’ll be frustrating’ — whatever it is.” Marc gives the humorous example of Asana where it was a requirement that the whole company did yoga together: “If you like yoga, this is the company for you. If you don’t like yoga, don’t go there. You’re going to be asked to put your feet in positions that you’re completely uncomfortable with.” He continues: “I think the very best companies tend to be polarizing. So if in your hiring process, you’re turning people off as much as you’re turning them on because they’re deciding ‘this is clearly not the right fit for me,’ I think that’s a good thing.”

REPORTER: "Can you describe the biggest difficulty out there? A few people going into the start thought the scores would be a lot lower. Obviously 3-under is leading" RAHM: "People thought it would be lower?" REPORTER. "People thought the scoring would be lower this morning" RAHM: "Have you been out there? Have you seen the golf course?" REPORTER: "Yeah" RAHM: "You know what, I can understand because, if you just go by some of the numbers, some of the fairways are wide, the greens aren't crazy firm. But a lot of those fairways are sloped in a way that they play very narrow. Like 15 today, I thought I was going to be in the fairway undoubtedly, and I was off the fairway. Same on 10, same on 4. It can easily roll off" "Then the rough doesn't look as long as many other majors, but it's such a thick blade of grass that, even when the lie looks okay, it catches you so bad" "So I can see how in appearance it might be easier, but it's not. You need to play really good golf to shoot lower than 3-under. And then on top of that, those pin locations today are good ones. I mean, they're tucked. They're not easy" "There was somebody earlier in the week where there was some chatter where people thought 15- to 20-under was going to win. And I think that got to somebody in the PGA, and they did something about it. Because if the golf course stays like this and it keeps firming up, yeah, obviously it's not going to be anything like that" #PGAChamp | Legion XIII

Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque was asked about a comment Damian Priest made recently about the same talent being in the top spots, and answers Jamie Iovine’s question on how he feels about the current generation of stars going forward and the “changing of the guard” right now in WWE — “Look, I get that. If you’re the guy that wants to take the spot, it’s frustrating when there’s guys above you that have the spot. We’re in a period of time where there’s a lot of top performers in top spots that over time have earned those spots and are selling tickets and are incredibly popular. So you really have to do something. The narrative of ‘It’s my turn. I’ve been here for a while’. There’s no turns. That’s not how it works. You earn the spot. Believe me. If somebody is getting over more than somebody else, we move that person into the spot and move the other person down. But it’s not just that, it’s not just they’re getting the loud crowd reaction. Are they going to be good in the spot? Are they going to hold up their end of the bargain? Are they going to screw up if we give it to them? Are they going to make a mistake that we regret? — There’s all those things factored in. And I love the fact that sometimes, talent are like ‘Well, it’s frustrating.’ Great, that means work harder. Get yourself there. Figure it out. Figure out the way. Figure how it gets done. I’ve seen a million talent succeed because of what they do. Not because storyline or creative. ‘They gave them the spot’. 99% of the time in this business, the person gets over then gets the push. That’s how it works. That’s how it’s supposed to work. You go do you then we follow it, because otherwise, most of the time, they will choke on it if it’s not what the fans believe in. Big believer in if you want the spot, go take it. Whenever anybody says ‘I don’t know why I’m not in that spot’…well I don’t know, are you more over than Cody? Roman? Punk? Liv? IYO? The people that are in that spot get there. Make those crowd reactions. Whatever you need to make it happen, that’s what we’re all here to do. I love that mentality because I think it makes people work harder, and if they’re not willing to work to get the spot then you shouldn’t have it anyway.” — via #SummerSlam Post-Show
