I'm not a coder, but could you not just count the amount of starting and closing parenthesis and if they're not equal it's invalid?

He was right, at least, that you need an even number of total brackets. He just assumed they were all parentheses because she said “string of parentheses”. The only real difference is that if the bracket types are mixed then you have to keep a count of each type.
