As Rewriting midlife and menopause explained to Maria Caulfield CBE, women with wombs, taking estrogen #HRT must take progesterone to protect them from endometrial cancer. With Utrogestan, one of the most popular forms of progesterone, suffering from shortages, women are at risk! Menopause Mandate

Women are half the population, and yet the majority of physicians have NO training on how to treat women with menopause. I talked to Rachel S. Rubin, MD and Dr. Kelly Casperson about how women are demanding better, and why Congress should PASS my bill to invest in menopause research & training.

ICYMI: Highlights from yesterday’s expert panel on SSRIs and pregnancy. “Serotonin may play a crucial role in the development of the organs of a baby in utero, specifically the heart, brain, and even the gut. SSRIs have also been implicated in different studies to be involved in postpartum hemorrhage, pulmonary hypertension, and cognitive downstream effects in the baby.”

Many women I see and speak to have been refused HRT for no medical reason. They have often been prescribed other medication to try and improve their menopausal symptoms including antidepressants, painkillers, sleeping tablets, anti hypertensives and statins. I have also seen women who have been given gabapentin, quetiapine and also ketamine for their low moods associated with their menopause. In this podcast, Jo talks openly about the medication she was given and the numerous menopausal symptoms she was experiencing which led her to a very dark place. It was only when she received the right dose and type of HRT she improved and has now stopped all these other medications. Receiving perimenopause and menopause advice and treatment is individualised. All women deserve to be listened to and receive the right type of HRT for them.

For more than two decades, the American medical establishment turned its back on women. Millions of women were told to fear the very therapy that could have given them strength, peace, and dignity through one of life’s most difficult transitions—menopause. That ends today. The FDA is initiating the removal of broad “black box” warnings from hormone replacement therapy products for menopause.

Only around 14% of menopausal women in the UK currently are prescribed HRT, which would be fine if only 14% of women wanted to take HRT but we know this isn’t the case. I constantly hear from so many women who aren’t being given a choice and are unable to have their HRT prescribed for them both in the UK and other countries. This is not right when we know HRT is safe and beneficial for the majority of menopausal women and the guidelines are clear it is a first line treatment to manage menopausal symptoms for most women. In areas of deprivation this number is much lower - in some areas only 2% of menopausal women are prescribed HRT and these women are more likely to be prescribed antidepressants, statins and blood pressure lowering treatments. Also they are more likely to have chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, clinical depression and osteoporosis - taking HRT can reduce the incidence of these diseases as well as improving symptoms. A lot of the work I do is about giving women the confidence to be better advocates for themselves and I hope by keeping this conversation going we can help more women access the care and treatment they want and deserve.

Statehouses and sporting governing bodies keep banning trans women from competing with other women. The evidence doesn't back that up.

🌹❗️During their free NHS 40 plus health check, women are assessed for conditions that may affect them as they grow older. Menopause, however, is not included❗️🌹 To include an assessment for Menopause would be cost-neutral and would help millions of women recognise the symptoms. Including the menopause in the 40-plus health check would also prevent needless GP appointments going forward. Menopause Mandate and I have been campaigning tirelessly on this issue, and I am so pleased to hear that the Secretary of State, Wes Streeting, agrees that progress needs to be made on this vital issue. #WomensHealth #Menopause #HealthCheck

In the UK, only around 14% of menopausal women take HRT and this number usually shocks people. But as you can hear Dr Mary Claire Haver talk about here - in the US it is only 4% now, when just over 20 years ago it was around 40%. Much of this reduction in HRT use and the negativity regarding HRT stems from the misinterpretation of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study which was published in 2002. For those of you who don’t know much about this, in 1993, the WHI began a clinical trial looking at the health effects of women taking oestrogen-only or combined HRT compared to a placebo. In 2002, researchers halted the part of the study looking at women taking both oestrogen and progesterone (two hormones that decline during the perimenopause onwards) early over concerns there were small increased risks of breast cancer, heart disease, strokes and blood clots. This led to confusion and concern from doctors and women worldwide, and in the UK women taking HRT fell sharply. But even with the older versions of HRT, the WHI researchers have subsequently acknowledged that HRT is the most effective treatment for managing menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and that taking oestrogen alone reduces the risk of breast cancer by 23% and death by breast cancer by 40%. It is time we move on from the misinterpretation of this study and allow more women to access hormone replacement if that is what they want.

Nearly 700,000 women, 50+, on long term sick leave in this country - often due to anxiety and depression. Yet, the dots of age and symptoms are not joined - that it could be #menopause. We need better training for occupational health specialists to support women in the workplace.

A few months ago, Afghan women came forward to share testimony for the People’s Tribunal for Women of Afghanistan. Their courage helped produce today’s judgment, which finds the Taliban responsible for gender persecution and operating an apartheid-like system of control over girls and women. The judgment also highlights a major gap. International law does not yet recognise gender apartheid as a crime. Afghan women made this moment possible and they want real action. Sahar Halaimzai, Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy at Malala Fund, reflects on what this means for the upcoming Crimes Against Humanity treaty negotiations and for efforts to protect the rights of girls and women everywhere. I acknowledge and understand that every woman does not want to take HRT and, as long as they are making that decision based on accurate evidence and information, that’s absolutely fine. What I don’t agree with however is that women who know they do want HRT still can’t access it. This really needs to change and I will not stop my work until it does.
