Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) is set to introduce “The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act,” which would DESTROY the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to arrest and hold dangerous illegal aliens. The bill already has 123 Democrat co-sponsors. “This bill brings dignity, justice, oversight, and accountability to the detention system by repealing mandatory detention, prohibiting the detention of families and children in family detention, phasing out the use of private detention facilities and jails, and requiring DHS to establish civil detention standards.” “The bill creates a presumption of release and imposes a higher burden of proof to detain primary caregivers and vulnerable populations. The bill also mandates the DHS Inspector General to conduct unannounced inspections and requires DHS to admit Members of Congress to detention facilities for unannounced inspections.” What a joke!

I spoke to a person detained by ICE yesterday, and it was heartbreaking. He is the caregiver of a young daughter, works two jobs, has medical issues, and has been in detention for over a month. We must continue to fight for real oversight at these detention facilities.

Here are those examples: • Reagan formalized more enforcement practices, including detention during asylum processing. Detention was used extensively during the Mariel boatlift in 1980. • George H.W. Bush used Guantanamo Bay as a holding site—a precursor to the offshoring of detention. • Bill Clinton during his administration detention capacity grew significantly due to the ‘96 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, which made detention mandatory for more offenses. • George W. Bush Post-9/11 expanded detentions through the Department of Homeland Security making immigration detention more systematized. • Barack Obama detained over 400,000 in a single year. This week, I went back to 26 Federal Plaza to conduct my weekly oversight of ICE detention facilities. ICE is once again trying to prevent me from conducting oversight, this time by imposing new paperwork requirements and a 48-hour delay before I can speak to detainees. It is outrageous and yet another attempt by this administration to dodge accountability.

Ms. Rachel: I've had the honor of meeting with 10 absolutely precious children their wonderful families who have been locked in Dilley Immigration Detention Center in Texas. A prison that is neglecting, abusing, and traumatizing kids. There is no safe amount of time for a child to be in detention. Dilley immigration detention center must be shut down. We need to end the cruel policies of family detention and family separation.

Today, I conducted my weekly oversight of the ICE detention facility at 26 Federal Plaza. I was able to speak to a woman whose family visited our triage center after her detention, and was able bring a smile to her face when I gave her a drawing that her daughter made for her. ICE tried unsuccessfully to limit my oversight today and will likely keep trying, but I’ll keep showing up for immigrant families in NY-10 to make sure their conditions of detention are appropriate.
