Simple trick: rearrange the statement The principal ____ attending the meeting, together with his deputies.

An English course is not easy. But this explanation is simple. M.C

Maths is easier.

@Dannyrockie Lol, dey play

@Dannyrockie Math is simple. Formulas and pattern repetition.

@deoladesign_ Formulas makes it easier to solve. Not all mathematics problems needs formula. M.C

So, the deputies, together with the principal ARE attending the meeting right?

There is another rule. If tested after this question, I am sure many will fail it. Q. The man, his wife, his children _____ attending the ceremony tomorrow. a. have b. are c. has d. is NB: This follows the principle of proximity.

What about if you have 'is' and 'was' as options for the answer in this statement 🤔

Lol

I think an easier way to solve this is by looking at the puntuation. The two commas set the phrase "together with his deputies" apart from the main sentence. It is the same as putting the phrase in a bracket.

The answer is "is" because of "with"

So it will be The deputies, together with the principal ARE attending the meeting.

I used to say I did not need classes to pass English until I had CO in GES101. English language has too many technicalities.

The sentence is even wrong

Instead, The principal is attending the meeting together with his deputies.

Nna eh! Too many information for common "is" , I rather do maths biko

She’s a thoroughbred. I learnt a new perspective today. Definitely need her in our classroom to do great wonders for our next generation 👏👏👏👏👏🌺

Somebody should turn on the light so I can hear her well

She no Sabi English, if are is not a singular verb then why do we say "how are you" as a singular verb?

What about this scenario? "The principal, together with his deputies, ‐— attending the meeting; they had an emergency on the road." Which verb best fits here?

God will bless Dele Ashade for me. His books, A1 and A to Z English really changed my life.

That’s a long process. Just reconstruct the sentence and the answer becomes plain. The Principal IS attending the meeting together with his deputies. Chikina.

Rule of antecedents And proximity

Please What is her h@ndle?

She’s wrong. What about his deputies? Are they invincible? Or abstract?

I think this was taught in either the Junior Secondary or Senior Secondary School. It has to do with what was then called the "Subject Verb Agreement".

Give me maths abeg 😭

Very simple.

The principal is attending the meeting together with his deputies. How is this difficult?

I have been surviving with the ones i know.. I no need add any thanks 😂

The Brits did us dirty. They came, gave us the curriculum and left. They told us to focus on the "structure" instead of learning the actual English language. English is a language just any other language. Just learn the damn language forget about saying it the "correct" way 😆

What’s her handle? I like her class

I learned this in JSS3 (middle school) over 30 years ago when I was about 13 years old. Do we have teenagers on X? Or are there adults who don’t know this basic English grammar?

@grok please direct me to her page
