The recent AI Impact Summit hosted by India recently brings focus on practical applications of AI. At Madukkarai in Tamil Nadu, a simple AI-based Elephant Detection System has enabled 8,679 safe elephant crossings in a little more than 2 years. Incidently it has also recorded 100 leopard alerts, 560 wild gaur alerts, and captured 14,888 deer alerts across two vulnerable railway stretches, protecting precious wildlife. In Gudalur in the Nilgiris, another AI system is working at the landscape level to generate real-time alerts for the local community, and in Hosur too, an AI system is helping elephants. These systems may not be perfect, no system ever is, but the foremost goal is protection. An urgent call came in: 3 elephants were stuck in a deep & steep-sided dam, escape was impossible – without help! Teams from the SWT and KWS responded, and Wildlife Works loaned a backhoe, which we drove to the scene on our flatbed truck. After hours of digging, all 3 elephants were able to climb to safety using a new passageway; a victorious outcome for the elephants & their rescuers. Learn more about our field projects:

Zero deaths. That is the mission. A dedicated team of forest officers, patrolling staff, loco pilots, drone operators and control centre monitors works round the clock at Tamil Nadu’s AI-powered Elephant Control and Command Centre in Madukkarai in Coimbatore to keep elephants safe. In just over two and a half years, the system has facilitated around 9,481 safe elephant crossings ensuring Zero elephant deaths on Railway Tracks, demonstrating how technology, human vigilance and teamwork can come together to protect wildlife. The system has generated more than 7,116 real-time alerts for railway authorities and loco pilots, leading to 3,821 instances where trains were slowed down or stopped to allow elephants to cross safely. Beyond elephants, the system has also detected deer, gaurs and leopards, creating a comprehensive AI-enabled wildlife monitoring network. The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen the system. AI-powered drones have been deployed for wider landscape surveillance, extending monitoring beyond fixed thermal cameras and providing real-time situational awareness of elephant movements. No system can ever be perfect, and the worry never really goes away. But we must keep learning, improving and doing better. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and in the forests of Ramgarh, it took a forest, a railway, and the locals to welcome one into the world. A pregnant elephant lay in labour on the tracks. The forest and railway officials acted swiftly. A coal train was halted for over two hours so the mother could give birth undisturbed. In that pause, a beautiful calf was born. No rush, no harm just a quiet act of kindness. Because sometimes, the most powerful journey begins when we choose to stop 🙂 #elephants #wildlifeconservation

We're giving our giant neighbours safe passage home. Human-wildlife conflict is one of the greatest threats facing elephants today. As habitats shrink and resources become scarce, elephants are increasingly tempted to leave protected land in search of greener pastures. Understandably, communities don’t welcome their presence and can go to extreme measures to drive them off their land. While we work to prevent incursions in the first place, we have also developed productive relationships with local communities to prevent them from taking matters into their own hands. By ground or by air, we provide a rapid response to shepherd elephants back into the national park, working in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service. Last year alone, our Aerial Unit helped over 400 elephants find safe passage home. In one memorable month, our pilots shepherded a herd of 50 back into the park, then we pulled off an ambitious operation to translocate an elephant family of three who had been stuck on community land for over a year. A big shout-out to Loco Pilot Das and Assistant Loco Pilot Umesh Kumar of the 15959 Kamrup Express for their swift and heroic action on 16th October in saving a herd of about 60 elephants crossing the railway tracks between Habaipur and Lamsakhang by applying emergency brakes. Pilots were alerted through a Artificial Intelligence based Detection System which comprehensively covers the track. This incident spotlights the importance of technology to prevent such near-misses. Tamil Nadu’s AI-based surveillance system implemented by us in Madukkarai, Coimbatore has also successfully prevented elephant-train collisions through 24/7 monitoring with thermal cameras and real-time alerts. Implementing similar solutions across vulnerable tracks can significantly reduce fatalities and enhance coexistence between wildlife and human infrastructure. Our Elephants are checking out the Mobile Wildlife Forensic cum Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at a Tamil Nadu Forest Department elephant camp. An initiative of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department, this first-of-its-kind facility is providing advanced veterinary care directly into the field. Equipped with a haematology analyser, serum biochemistry analyser, microscope, centrifuge, refrigerators and a -20°C deep freezer, it enables rapid on-site diagnosis, disease surveillance, forensic investigations and instant diagnostic reports. Something incredibly exciting is happening in Gudalur in The Nilgiris District which has been facing serious human wildlife conflict for years but this is now set to change. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has just launched another AI-powered Command and Control Centre using 46 AI enabled thermal cameras to detect wildlife movement early and warn people with real time alerts. 🚩NEW VIDEO! California's $115M vs Colorado's $15M Wildlife Overpass!!! It has come to my attention the Gavin Newsom is spending $114 million on a bridge for animals so I visited the I-25 Greenland Wildlife Overpass in Colorado to compare. CO made the largest wildlife overpass in North America with $15M in costs and construction began January 2025 and was done by December of 2025. Man, Gavin is making Colorado look good! California broke ground in April of 2022! 1,449 days later it's still not complete. In LA with the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, they are focused on cultural input and blessings, with the special engineered soil!!!! BTW I'm pretty I am one of the first animals to come even close to this overpass...

Late last month, we helped shepherd this herd of 31 elephants safely off community land into the National Park. We’re at the tail end of the dry season (rains have just started to arrive), and it’s been a busy one in terms of human-wildlife conflict mitigation operations. These operations take many forms - they can take hours or days, multiple aircraft, ground teams, and sometimes even a full darting and translocation on trucks. But the effort is worth it, supporting coexistence and protecting both human and wild lives. Donors like you make these critical operations possible. Every contribution furthers our mission to promote coexistence, protect Kenya's wildlife, and secure the habitats across the country.

Shepherding a band of wandering bulls off community land and back into a protected area. This afternoon, KWS received reports of a bachelor herd that had strayed onto community land. Given the high risk of human-elephant conflict, we launched an aerial response — the size and dispersal of the group made it a two-helicopter job. Flying in tandem, our pilots successfully shepherded 17 elephants across the river and back to the safety of Tsavo East National Park. We’re committed to creating a sustainable future for wildlife and the communities who live alongside them. To learn more about our work: #coexistence

🐻 Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus) is a Schedule I species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, enjoying the same highest level of legal protection as tigers, elephants, and rhinos. Yet videos showing bears being kept, handled, or paraded around villages continue to surface on social media. Whether presented as tradition, entertainment, or awareness, such practices raise serious concerns about wildlife welfare and legal compliance. Wild animals are not meant to be pets, performers, or attractions. Conservation is not about bringing wildlife into human space it is about ensuring they can thrive safely in their natural habitats. If this animal is being held without proper authorization, it could constitute a violation of India’s wildlife laws.
