I think there are gonna be tons of jobs.” If we could go back to 2019 and show people our latest model, not only would they say that it's AGI, they would say that the economy would have been completely upended. And that has not happened. Anytime you're that wrong and that confident, which I think we were as a field, you have to update. AI is just very jagged. It's like superhuman genius in some ways, like dumb toddler in others. And people have, so far, extremely complementary skills to AI. It’s not taste…the world may need a new kind of word for the kind of judgment that people are very good at that AIs seem to really deeply struggle with. You can go hire an AI consultant right now or talk to an AI sales rep or hire an AI engineer. And somehow most people seem to still really prefer interacting with a human. I definitely would rather engage with a person than engage with an AI for almost everything. Human values have value because they're human. We are deeply hardwired to care about people.”

Steve Jobs was a great communicator of technology, and we could learn something from him today, in the context of AI. Sam Altman recently said, "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to cure cancer." That's a fine quote. The abundance AI promises is super exciting. But Sam is saying that AI is going to figure out how to cure cancer. And if you've used these tools today, and talked to people who are at the labs, the reality is it's much more likely that humans will use AI to cure cancer. Steve might have said: "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, humans can use AI to cure cancer." Small tweak, but a big difference. Steve Jobs was not one to shy away from impressive specs and massive scale, but flipping the final line from "AI will cure cancer" to "Humans will use AI to cure cancer" makes all the difference. Apple under Steve Jobs put human centrality at the heart of everything they did. And we need that spirit to infuse how we communicate about AI today.

"I know some AI CEOs are saying things like 50% of the jobs are going to go away. To say nothing of how tone deaf it is for someone to be saying my company is going to eliminate 50% of the jobs AND my company is going to be the most valuable company in human history." The criticism isn't that job change isn't coming, it is and Altman said that clearly. His point is that framing mass displacement as an inevitable feature while simultaneously positioning your company as the biggest winner in history is a special kind of detached from reality. And the data actually backs him up on the nuance here. In 2024, AI directly created over 119,900 jobs mostly in data centers, infrastructure, and AI development itself. Jobs lost to AI in the same period roughly 12,700 and that's less than 0.1% of all layoffs that year. The World Economic Forum projects 92 million roles displaced by 2030, but 170 million new ones created, a net gain of 78 million jobs globally. History says this pattern holds every time. When the PC went mainstream, entire categories of jobs vanished, entire industries we now take for granted didn't exist, 60% of U.S. workers today are in occupations that didn't exist in 1940.
