However, this is a film only addition, and it differs significantly from Tolkien’s books. In the books, Boromir is not sent to Rivendell by Denethor. Instead, he travels there because of a prophetic rhyme he and his brother Faramir heard in their dreams. This vision is described in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and recounts a shared dream experienced by both brothers. Seek for the Sword that was broken In Imladris it dwells; There shall be counsels taken Stronger than Morgul-spells. There shall be shown a token That Doom is near at hand, For Isildur's Bane shall waken, And the Halfling forth shall stand. These words were heard in a remote, clear voice, crying out from the West, "where there was still some faint light in spite of dark skies".
