In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Extended Edition, in the “Sons of the Steward” scene, Denethor orders Boromir to travel to Rivendell and bring the One Ring back to Gondor. However, this is a film only addition, and it differs significantly from Tolkien’s books. In the books, Boromir is not sent to Rivendell by Denethor. Instead, he travels there because of a prophetic rhyme he and his brother Faramir heard in their dreams. This vision is described in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and recounts a shared dream experienced by both brothers. Seek for the Sword that was broken In Imladris it dwells; There shall be counsels taken Stronger than Morgul-spells. There shall be shown a token That Doom is near at hand, For Isildur's Bane shall waken, And the Halfling forth shall stand. These words were heard in a remote, clear voice, crying out from the West, "where there was still some faint light in spite of dark skies". It referred to the halfling Frodo Baggins presenting the One Ring at the Council of Elrond, and was what had led Boromir to travel to Rivendell for the Council.
