If chips, models, networks & agent architectures all become dramatically more efficient.. Do we still really need $50-100 Billion data centers? "I think you're gonna see this new wave of companies that are doing distributed data centers. These data centers are mid-size. It's gonna be even more important as...

What if we stopped calling them data centers? Samo Burja: "Consider why do we talk about data centers, not supercomputers?" "A data center in my hometown that sounds like someone's gonna steal my data. I don't feel like I have any opportunities." "A supercomputing center in my hometown? Suddenly I might have opportunities. I might have a job. Galaxy-brain stuff is happening there." "These are not data centers anymore, these are actually distributed supercomputers." "If the median use case is not the laptop on my desk or the phone in my hand, the chips can be pretty big. You might actually see the macro chip. I think people are underrating that future and not really expecting it."

I’m not saying they are building all these data centers to roll out the social credit scores. I’m just saying I don’t think we need all of these data centers to run ChatGPT, Grok, Claude etc. But if you did want social credit scores, you would need a lot of data centers🤔

🚨 NOW: VP JD Vance says data centers are NOT controversial as long as they produce their own energy "You should be putting power BACK into the grid — not taking it out. If that happens, data centers are not that controversial." "Build the power plants WITH the data centers. Probably 99% of the backlash to data centers came from areas where building it means higher utility and electricity for the people on the ground." "These companies should take advantage of federal deregulatory efforts we've undertaken." JD and Trump are 100% correct!

Cowboy CEO Baiju Bhatt on why orbital data centers won't just be a SpaceX monopoly. "We're working on it. I think that if there's enough commercial demand for this, and there are enough dollars flowing to this, I think that capitalism is efficient, right?" "I think that as we look at, at least in the US, data centers are not very popular. They're actually quite unpopular, right? "And the intersection between these massive build outs, as we look out to the amount of capacity that people want—we're still kind of the early innings of this stuff." "The frustration from the US population, I see this probably getting worse before it gets better, which means that if AI wants to eat a ton of energy, it's gonna need some other places to get it." "So I think there is a degree of inevitability, not just to data centers in space, but also the other ways of powering AI." "And I think if there's enough commercial activity, you're gonna see a lot of people try to do it. And like I said, we're also doing it." With Mo Islam at the NYSE 🏛

I think the fact is there are only going to be four or five of these companies that are able to raise the billions required to build the infrastructure to support these models. It's a global competition, and particularly against the Chinese right now because they're trying to beat us on AI, because the country with the best AI is gonna win all the wars. That's what's gonna happen. I think at the end of the day you want diversification in your portfolio, not just one stack. For me, I'm playing the picks and shovels. I'm building energy because you need energy for this stuff, and I'm building data centers. Now, there are different things, but right now we need more electrical power in this country beyond just data centers. We just need power because we got a booming economy.

Bernie Sanders: "I think we need to be thinking seriously about a moratorium on these data centers. Frankly, I think you gotta slow this process down. It's not good enough for the oligarchs to tell us, 'It's coming, you adapt.' What are they talking about? Are they gonna guarantee healthcare to all people? What are they gonna do when people have no jobs? Make housing free?"

Sen. Husted blames his constituents for record number of data centers in Ohio: "We just have to realize we're in this world in which we've created the demand. We the people have created the demand for these data centers because we use all of these digital products that it processes, and if we don't want them, then don't use them. I mean, you can go back to the bunny ear antenna on your TV, you don't need a data center. But if you're connected to a wire, you're using the data center. So, understand, when we look in the mirror, we are the problem."

New Jersey residents are noticing construction crews surveying and replacing lines to upgrade power infrastructure for Data Centers Residents are paying for these upgrades These lines being updated are for a data center that’s not even close, it’s across the bridge 20 minutes away This is happening across Fairless Hills, Bristol, Middletown, and surrounding Bucks County spots due to multiple data center projects New Jersey already has 80+ data centers with more planned so these updates are happening everywhere Residents in these areas are already paying some of the power costs and grid upgrades related to data centers Welcome to corporate socialism. Money is taken from you to pay for the data centers infrastructure, but they won’t share any of the profits with you It’s called socialized losses and privatized profits

We have a real problem with these so called "experimental data centers" They will drive up your electric bills, jeopardize our water supply, and are so loud you will hear them 24/7. I want to be clear. I am not going to regulate data centers, I am not going to reform data centers; as Florida Governor, I will reject and remove every data center in our state.

As AI infrastructure scales, how do American's benefit? COATUE 's Thomas Laffont: "The token is the atomic unit of AI. If you produce tokens you can produce AI. We're seeing now these factories from power to chips to data centers get put together so you can produce tokens. How did you think about making sure that the benefits were widely shared?" Director Michael Kratsios : "The greatest and most powerful well-capitalized companies in the world are the ones that are most interested in building these data centers." "The President brought the companies to the White House and got them to agree to build, bring, or buy their own power to build these data centers." "The American people need to have confidence that when these data centers come to town they will not be the ones who are gonna be bearing the cost of that electricity." WORDS TO PONDER. We are spending a fortune in this country and in other countries toward developing the best AI in the world. Do you know the difference between 'Abstract Synthesis' and 'Concrete Synthesis'? We are in an AI bubble - Are the braniacs creating problems for us in reality with all the DATA CENTERS? Are these centers going to become useless very quickly? IS he right?

BREAKING: Trump just fully endorsed Data Centers in our towns and communities. "Data centers are going to be very popular because this is the group and they're the ones that want it (sitting with Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg). And they're also the ones that want to see communities that are safe and happy and they're going to make communities very, very happy. These people and others having to do with the data centers that you've been reading so much about, I think they're going to do things for the community that will be really financially beneficial and otherwise beneficial."

"Elon Musk is probably doing more for America than any other American. He's single handedly bringing manufacturing back to America. SpaceX is in some ways the most important defense contractor in America. What he's doing with Starlink is amazing for the world. He's creating all of these blue collar manufacturing jobs which is a goal of a lot of liberals and good for America. He's done more than any living human to decarbonize the world. And if you're upset about data centers on earth for environmental reasons, here you go - he's putting data centers in space" - Gavin Baker Patrick OShaughnessy

Gavin Baker reveals people are buying private jets, stripping the engines, and using them as turbines to power data centers "Residuals for private jets are extremely strong these days. And a big part of the reason is people are taking jet engines off old planes and repurposing them as turbines to power data centers. "It's crazy. This is a big business and it's growing really, really fast. You have Caterpillar, you have Cummins, you have GE Vernova, you have Siemens Energy, they're all expanding capacity fast." "The Billy Bob Thorntons here in America are gonna work with those companies and get these turbines on the ground."

David Friedberg says Google's AI stars are walking out because the company is funding data centers, not their models. "So now if you're one of the great computer scientists, you're Demis, you're Jeff Dean, you're this whole crew, and you're inside at Google and they're allocating capital not to your models, not to the things that you're most interested in." "But they're allocating capital to infrastructure and data centers and supporting the broad ecosystem of models." "You start to say, well, given the fact that I can go down the road and visit Brad Gerstner and a couple other people and raise a couple billion dollars at a multi-billion dollar pre-money with a PowerPoint deck because I'm the greatest in the world at doing this, that might be a better path for me." "And I think that that's the moment. So the way I would frame it is capex is high alpha, low beta in data center infrastructure. That capital and model development theoretically could be high alpha, but it's very high beta. It's a very risky way to deploy capital."

Sam Altman in a new interview says Orbital Data Centers are not going to matter at scale this decade: “I honestly think the idea, with the current landscape of putting data centers in space is ridiculous. If you do the very rough math of launch costs relative to the cost of power on earth and to say nothing how you are going to fix a broken GPU in space— they do break a lot unfortunately— we are not there yet. There will be a time, space is great for a lot of things, Orbital Data Centers are not something that is going to matter at scale this decade.” This clip isn’t going to age well for Sam.

David Friedberg: Michael Burry’s Datacenter Math is Wrong “I actually think Michael Burberry's got this wrong.” “What Michael Burry is saying is that all of these hyperscalers have extended their depreciation schedule or the useful life of their data centers by roughly 2x, which cuts the operating costs in half when they report it in earnings. And so it's making their earnings inflate.” “So he's claiming they're cooking the books. Google first made this change in Q1 of 2021, where they said the servers are now going from 3 to 4 years. Separately in 2021, Google took networking equipment from 3 to 5 years. And then in 2023, they took it from 5 to 6 years.” “And so this is a result of this effort where they went in and did an analysis. So what happened?” “What happened in the data centers is that the data centers transitioned from being primarily data storage and data transfer systems, where you would use hard drives and RAM and memory to store data and then transmit it back out, to being data processing centers because of the AI boom.” “So as AI became more important in the data center, more of the dollars that are going into data centers were allocated towards chips from data storage, which initially was hard drives.” “And then suddenly, when you put these processors in to process the data to do AI, the majority of the spend and the majority of the energy is going towards the processors.” “I made some calls and I checked around with some other friends, and everyone says the same thing: that these 7-8 year old TPUs and GPUs that are sitting in the data centers are still being used and they're being used at 100% utilization.” “So that actually justifies and validates the depreciation schedule being much longer versus shorter.”
