Genesis says God saw that the thoughts of mankind had become continually evil. This wasn’t random destruction from a cruel God, it was judgment on a world that had become completely corrupted. The Apkallu, led by Oannes, are said to emerge from the waters of the Persian Gulf and begin teaching humanity the foundations of civilization including writing, agriculture, law, architecture, and sacred knowledge. This was at a moment when human society was super fragile and only beginning again. This raises a set of unresolved questions that the texts themselves never fully answer. Were the Apkallu NHI associated with the deep, possessing an unusual empathy for early humanity? Were they human survivors of a far more advanced pre flood culture, passing on retained knowledge to a diminished population? Or do these accounts describe something else entirely, an interaction that does not fit into modern categories of myth, history, or even speculation? What do you think?

Learning this truth might lead to rebellion and, ultimately, being cast out of the Garden of Eden. The "Watchers" would then have children with the ordinary survivors living outside the Garden of Eden.
