This was a was pretty dark story SPOILERS In A Tale of Tales (2015), the story of the king and the flea’s hide unfolds as follows: The King of Highhills, eccentric and detached, becomes fascinated with a flea, feeding it his own blood until it grows to the size of a pig. He keeps it hidden in his chambers, treating it like a pet, and neglects his duties and his teenage daughter, Princess Viola. When the flea dies, the king, grieving its loss, decides to use its massive hide to create a bizarre challenge to find a suitor for Viola. He announces that whoever can guess the origin of the hide will win her hand in marriage, without consulting her. Suitors from across the land attempt the challenge but fail, as no one can identify the strange skin. A grotesque ogre, living in a cave, arrives and correctly guesses it’s a flea’s hide, possibly through instinct or familiarity with monstrous things. The king, bound by his own rules, reluctantly gives Viola to the ogre, who takes her to his cave. Viola, terrified and miserable, endures captivity until she lures the ogre into a trap, slitting his throat with a knife to escape. She returns to her father’s kingdom, bloodied but alive, and confronts him for his reckless decision. The story culminates at a coronation ceremony, where Viola appears alongside characters from the film’s other tales, her survival marking her as a resilient figure despite her father’s negligence. The king faces no explicit punishment, but his detachment and odd fixation on the flea leave him isolated, with his daughter’s ordeal as the consequence of his actions.
