If math was like this when I was in elementary school I would’ve been done. Way too many extra steps to solve a simple problem

That’s wild. This is why kids can’t do math in their head. Common sense has left the conversation. And when he broke it down to 40+14, he did what he should have done with the original problem. Our school system is cooked.

I’m thankful my kid is learning the old way

That or a sane private school

Making this super complicated is why kids are retarded these days.

I would have been done if we did this in school

Or you could just add 6 plus 8 😂

Yeah I’m happy my daughters school doesn’t do this too

Mine go to a private/charter school and they teach sane math. No parent can help their kids with that nonsense! We all learned common sense math instead of common core!

I HATE the new math. I don’t comply. When I help my kids with their homework I teach them the right way. One time a teacher wrote a note about doing it their way and I just wrote back saying that as long as they got the correct answer I don’t want to hear from her again. She didn’t write back again so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just add 20 and take away 2 like a normal person…

I’m adding the 8 and 6 then carrying the one

Alright well as long as you’re not doing whatever it is that guy is doing 😂

Why are we doing 3 MORE addition problems when you only had to do one ? This is stupid

I’m almost positive they did this to alienate parents. I’m a high level construction accountant and common core is fucking retarded

this is what common core did to our math. I saw it with my daughter's homework. It breaks the numbers down to groups then they work with the groups to come to an answer. I hear them out. It makes sense, but in the end I see that they are teaching kids what we do in our head without writing down the steps. I think the smarter kids eventually do see the patterns and do the grouping in their heads, but maybe they're trying to get the slower kids the concept too. Maybe it's their "no kids left behind" strategy, but ya, makes your head spin to try to write out all the steps we normally do in our head.

This is the stupidest way to do simple math. Instead of demanding students raising standards they are lowering the bar.

6+8 = 14 Carry the 1.... 54... Seems as we progress as a species we overcomplicate things

Settle down boomers. It's a simple Tens and Ones column explanation. As you can see, he solves the problem "the old fashion way" at the end. It's a procedural explanation of the traditional solution method, not a step by step guide HOW they should always do math.

couldn't you just carry the 1 and be done with it? algebra problems take less time than this.

They learn both methods but this helps them understand where how all the numbers are coming together. Now I insist both methods, our way and that way need to be taught. More of exploring and then reinforcing with just the simple algorithm.

@clerpatriot Stupidest thing I have ever saw. What happened to the way we learned, adding the numbers on the right which is 14 carry the 1 over to the left adding them together & getting 54, which seems much easier than this BS to me at least.

Simple addition and subtraction should be rote, rote, rote. Flash cards and memorization would serve them better.

@clerpatriot This is why kids can’t read, write, or do math - they teach them the retarded way to do everything

This teaches them to do math on their heads much better as an adult. This is why most adults now are horrible at solving math problems in their heads quickly. The amount of times I’ve seen people grab calculators to compute a two-digit operation is alarming

Taught my daughter how to add/subtract small numbers then how to carry & borrower then "thousands separators" in 4th grade. After 2 weeks we started times tables, then division. Concepts R easy for a young eager mind & dedicated parent. No, she is not gifted...

This is actually how my brain naturally does math. When I was younger it made my teachers mad because I couldn't show then the work they wanted. Not even joking. Bastards. I knew they shoukd have listened to me.

I’m not mad at it. One method breaks it down into smaller bits, adding up the “tens” is easy and then the remaining is small. But yeah, far fewer steps the old way.

They have time... learning different paths and relationship. Breaking it down. Its not about being fast at those kids age. Good job for being faster than these kids.

It's common core math. Which is garbage. Common core was never to make sure kids know how to read & write it was to dumb down society. There are books on this. That coupled with Teach for America got rid of the ten year real educational teacher.

What the actual fuck. No way he’s a teacher. If he is, it explains why these kids cant to basic math, read or write cursive.

It’s obvious yall don’t understand why it’s taught this way. Never taught nothing and telling teachers how to teach. This way is proving to them why you carry the one. They TOLD us to do certain things but never explain why we do those things.

My kids used to bring this home in elementary school. I would show them the correct way to do the math and then show them how idiotic it was to do in the way the teacher wanted it. Common Core is a Trojan horse that many governors fell for and it's very hard to repeal.

This is why kids are failing left and right. It’s just absolutely more work and a result of no child left behind from the Bush presidency. Also why the kids can’t finish the stupid state exams they are given every year.

Designed to make generations math illiterate. No wonder they don’t know how many states are in the US, or what countries border the US, or who was the first president.
