I get what you are trying to say Senator but it’s important to clarify that NO, Social Security payments will not stop if the U.S. federal government shuts down. These benefits are classified as mandatory spending under federal law, meaning they are funded through dedicated trust funds and ongoing appropriations that do not require annual congressional approval or discretionary budget resolutions. As a result, retirement, disability, survivors’, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments continue to be issued on their regular schedule without interruption, even during a lapse in appropriations. This has been the case in every previous government shutdown, including those in 2013, 2018–2019, and shorter lapses in between. The Social Security Administration (SSA) maintains a contingency plan to ensure about 90% of its workforce remains on duty specifically to process and deliver these payments accurately and on time. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements also continue uninterrupted.
