Oddly enough Quill screwing things up was likely what Strange wanted to happen. He saw endless outcomes and needing this specific one to happen. It's likely the original plan of snatching the gauntlet would've failed regardless and it would've cost everyone even more

James Gunn hated this plot point because it went directly against Quil's established character. He's already proved that he was able to let go of his love for Gamora in order to do the right thing. Gunn said this was a betrayal of his character by the writers.
