Some recent messages that are now broadcast to Russians: Russian propagandist Karaganov stated that the United States was the instigator of the war between Russia and Ukraine, but that it had already "begun to back away," while Europe was "whipping up military hysteria" and preparing for war. "Europe must finally realize that it will be destroyed if [the aggression] continues. And the sooner it realizes this, the fewer of our people will die. Therefore, I think the time will come when the president should amend the military doctrine with a provision stating that if a war is unleashed against us - and it has been unleashed by an enemy that surpasses us demographically and economically - we are obliged to use nuclear weapons," Karaganov said. Do not be under any illusions that the Russian war against Ukraine is "Putin's war". Russian state propaganda has created a parallel reality in the minds of most of all Russians, where they are not the ones who attacked a neighboring country, destroying entire cities, kidnapping children and killing civilians every day. It's just like during World War II, where ordinary Germans said that Jews were doing well in concentration camps, and after losing and being taken to gas chambers to show what was happening there, they made excuses that "they didn't know." No, they, like the Russians, knew the terrible truth. Russians just convince themselves that it's not so and they are the good guys, and the Ukrainians are the bad guys. Only a military defeat for Russia will bring the bewildered Russians back to reality. And if Russia wins, it will only convince the Russians that their barbaric government is doing everything right and aggression and imperialism will only flourish...

Again, this does not sound like the Russians, and in particular Vladimir Putin, were bent on conquering all of Ukraine, winning a decisive victory. And in fact, what happens after 19th March in Istanbul is that the two sides do begin to negotiate, and it's very clear that there are a lot of difficult issues on the table, and it's not clear you would have ever gotten an agreement. But the central agreement on the table is the question of Ukrainian neutrality. And what was going on here is that the Russians just wanted to make sure that Ukraine did not join NATO. They were not interested in conquering all of Ukraine. They did not want Ukraine to turn into a Western bulwark on them on their border. And that's what this operation was all about. Almost impossible to sustain the story that the Russians were interested in conquering Ukraine. My final point on this is those negotiations eventually break down, and as I said, agreement that would have ended the war back then, but it's not the Russians who walk away from, the negotiations. He honestly admitted that Kyiv is launching drone attacks on Russia to make life unbearable for Russians. According to him, Crimea is successfully being isolated from the rest of Russia by Kyiv, through drone strikes. And basically letting the Europeans play a much larger role, in terms of running the alliance. So I think the alliance is in trouble. But furthermore, there's no way you're gonna get a European consensus to bring Ukraine into NATO. And furthermore, given the state of Ukraine, given the damage that's been done to Ukraine, Ukraine will be in no position, to enter NATO or the EU for that matter. So again, you end the war today, Russia controls a huge slice of Ukrainian territory in the east. And furthermore, it has succeeded in preventing Ukraine from joining NATO. Finally, huge destruction has been done to Ukraine. Estimates are that it'll take 600 billion dollars. Just think about that, 600 billion dollars to repair all the damage that has been done to Ukraine. And this doesn't take out ... take into account the demographic consequences, all the people who have fled Ukraine and will never come back, all the Ukrainians who have died. Before this war started, it was commonplace for people to talk about Ukraine being in a demographic death spiral. If anything, that situation has only been exacerbated. So in terms of where we are today in the war, were that war to end today, I think it's quite clear that Ukraine is in a disastrous situation. And I think there is no chance that Ukraine can reverse this situation. Anybody who believes, that, Ukraine can recapture territory that it lost, that it can wage a strategic bombing campaign that can bring the Russians to their knees and get them to negotiate an agreement, get the Russians to negotiate an agreement, that is favorable to Ukraine and reverses much of the damage that has been done, is living in a dream world. This is just not gonna happen. The best that the Ukrainians can hope for at this point in time is freezing the status quo. And as I say, if you freeze the status quo, this is a disastrous outcome for Ukraine. It's a dysfunctional rump state. It's lost at least 20% of its territory. President Trump gave Ukraine lethal weapons—javelins and stingers—that killed Russians and saved Kyiv as Biden was figuring out if it was an invasion or “just a minor incursion.” The strange part about Mehdi Hasan's argument is that he actually seems to agree with the current outcome President Trump has accomplished (basically putting the ball back in Putin’s court), but as a leftist, he just CAN’T give Trump credit for it.
