What do you mean “if” it’s true? It absolutely is. The light from the sun takes 8(ish) minutes to reach us. If it went out, we wouldn’t know for that long. Pluto wouldn’t know for about 5 hours. Our radio bubble is about 100ly wide. No one outside that knows we have radio.

Dinosaurs went extinct 66 million years ago. So aliens 50 million light years away would not be seeing them. They missed them by 12 million years. First mammals appeared 225 million years ago. So they would see mammals.

Um, mind blowing? It's certainly true. What did you think light-year meant? Sorry. That's kinda mean. But really, this shouldn't be new to you. Here's one reason that might make it worth remembering. There's a chance we might see the star Betelgeus go supernova in our lifetime. It will be a magnificent view from earth. Especially if it's in the fall/winter months and we won't have to look past the sun to see it. But, for us to see it, it will have had to happen about 700 years ago.
