In 1966, CBS News aired "The Week in Space," covering the Gemini 9A mission. This broadcast included in-studio simulations to help viewers understand the mission's progress. Recently, some have misinterpreted these simulations as evidence of a faked spacewalk. However, during the original broadcast, anchor Walter Cronkite clearly identified these segments as simulations. For instance, he stated, "This is our simulation here in McDonnell what's going on right now." citeturn0search1 At the time of the broadcast, there were no significant complaints or allegations suggesting that the Gemini 9A mission or CBS's coverage was faked. The simulations were a standard practice to provide visual context for viewers, especially when live footage was unavailable or technically unfeasible. It's important to distinguish between actual mission footage and these educational simulations. The Gemini 9A mission, including astronaut Eugene Cernan's spacewalk, was a genuine and documented event in NASA's history. Misinterpretations of archival broadcasts should be addressed with careful consideration of the original context and content. For a comprehensive understanding, you can watch the original CBS News Special from June 3, 1966, which includes both the simulations and Cronkite's commentary:

This was a simulation made specifically for CBS. Walter Kronkite says as much multiple times throughout the special.

Who is out there recording? No safety line can be seen from the camera perspective. One camera looks to be on the craft the other looks to be in the void of space stabilized.

Community notes nailed it on this one, I watched the whole video and it was actually an in studio simulation trying to show people on TV visually what was going.
