If you asked me to choose a single acting performance that explains why the world is the way that it is I would choose this. RIP Robert Duvall, one of the most complex and ingenious actors of the New Hollywood.

Movie is called Network because OP didn't include such info

The Network 4K is calling my name during the next Criterion sale

"Herb, tell em."

One of the greatest scripts ever written. And one of the most prophetic.

An all time great movie yeller! Giant of an actor. Tom Hagen man, perhaps the only real human inside that gangster world.

Thought maybe it was his appearance at the beginning of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), a scene he shot for free.

A master of quiet intensity. Duvall showed us that truth in performance can be louder than spectacle.

Should've won every possible Oscar.

Robert Duvall was one of the greatest actors of all time, and he was a favorite of mine. But any scene where you get to act across from Bill Holden will elevate your craft. RIP to both of them.

He was in so many great films. One of the most outstanding actors ever. Sadly, he will no longer be able to experience the smell of napalm in the morning

It’s a crime he wasn’t at least nominated for this role. I know it’s tough being slotted with Holden, Dunaway and Finch, but he’s so good

Sean - do you know if they ever released "The Outfit" in 4K? Underrated Duvall (and Parker/Westlake adapation)

They didn't. It's not even on Blu. A favorite of mine, too.

Damn shame. Would make a great double bill with Point Blank

And also:

Gotta suspect that Bari Weiss has fallen asleep to this movie ten thousand times and imbued her being with the dark power of Diana Christensen.

This movie was so ahead of its time. Could easily come out today and still feel pertinent. Seems like this inspired Succession too.

The way he smacks the newspaper is permanently etched in my brain. RIP.

The way he runs his hands over his head and straightens his vest! The “whaddaya think of that?” look he throws at Holden’s character. Amazing. And, no one better at bringing Paddy Chayefsky’s amazing dialogue to life!

Lumet got the best performance of their career out of basically every actor he ever worked with.

Never seen Network. I’ll fix that today.

Network could've come out now and been just as pertinent.

One of his greatest, and stunningly understated scenes is Tom Hagen paying his call on Frankie Five Angels in the penitentiary. Now *that’s* acting. RIP.

He would also do these smaller movies: Tender Mercies, The Apostle, A Family Thing, among others. One of my very favorite actors.

“Why dyou hurt me Michael, ive always been loyal to you” Breaks my heart everytime

I hope you’ve all seen Tender Mercies.

I disagree with the scene but whole heartedly with the movie... Perhaps you meant this scene?

"Processed, instant God." That's all the media board rooms see. Numbers. More profit for them. They are absolutely removed from the normal human functions of psychology & rationality, & all their leadership decisions reflect that. Absolutely unhealthy for humanity & our future.

Every time I watch Network it’s like a spiritual experience. So much intelligence and great writing and scorching performances.

We are on the same page !

My first lesson as a kid about the corruption of media was seeing Gene Shalit pan Network, and my dad explaining why.

@markaaltman I miss films like this, strong dialogue fantastically acted ,believable.

In a movie filled with genius, iconic scenes, this is yet another, less-heralded, and Duvall is so so good here. Elevates Chayefsky's already brilliant monologuing with just relentlessly perfect inflection and physicality choices throughout this entire freaking scene.

"...a big, fat, big-titted hit!!!"

I was always struck by how in “Apocalypse Now” he makes a big show of wanting to give a wounded VC soldier water but then gets distracted by a chance to be on camera and doesn’t

A giant of an actor. Tender Mercies remains one of my fav films of all time. RIP Robert Duvall.
