Environment Canada issued an Orange Warning that air quality is so bad that it's likely to harm your health, an 8 out of 10 on the air quality index. So, please stay indoors. The City of Philadelphia has less than three months until our contract with the trash incinerator in Chester expires. Burning trash produces toxic air and ash that make our planet and our communities sick. That's why we banned trash incinerators in Philly in the 1980s. If something isn't safe for Philly, it isn't safe for Chester. During yesterday's budget hearing with the Sanitation Department, the Parker Administration made it clear that they still oppose efforts to end our dirty deal with trash incinerators. This is disappointing, especially since Mayor Parker ran for office on the promise to make us Clean, Green, and Safe. It isn't too late for Mayor Parker to do the right thing and stop trashing our air! I will keep fighting until everyone in Philly and Chester has the clean air and healthy environment they deserve! ✊🏾

Coming back to Delhi from Wayanad where the air is beautiful and the AQI is 35, was like entering a gas chamber. The blanket of smog is even more shocking when seen from the air. Delhi’s pollution gets worse every year. We really should put our heads together and find a solution for cleaner air. It’s beyond this party or that, it’s practically impossible to breathe especially for kids, elders and those with respiratory issues. We just have to do something about it.

Most of our major cities are living under a blanket of poisonous air. Millions of children are getting lung diseases, their future is being destroyed, and people are getting cancer. Older people are struggling to breathe. This is an interesting issue because I am certain that there would be full agreement between the government and us on this. This is not an ideological issue; everybody in the House agrees that air pollution—and the damage it is doing to our people—is something we should co-operate on. I think it is important that the government develops a plan to get rid of air pollution in our cities. We are more than happy to co-operate with the government to develop such a plan. On this issue, we can show the country that we can work together on something that is critical. We should have a detailed discussion in Parliament on this, and the Prime Minister should put in place a methodical, systematic plan for each city—one that can, over the next 5 or 10 years, make life easier for our people. : LoP Shri Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha

Replacing gas with renewables for California’s electricity has reduced twice the carbon as all the world’s carbon capture projects Just to give an idea of how insanely useless carbon capture and direct air capture are, consider the following. All 77 of the world’s carbon-capture facilities capture about 64 million tonnes of CO2 per year. But a quarter of that CO2 is added back to the air from the energy needed to capture and pipe the CO2 and more is added back because 82 percent of all CO2 captured is used to dig more oil out of the ground, a process that releases 85 percent of the captured CO2 back to the air. Accounting for both leaves a net of only 19 million tonnes of CO2 per year captured. Yet from 2023 to 2026, California’s main electricity grid replaced 61 percent of its fossil gas with wind-water-solar electricity plus imports, which themselves are 57 percent wind-water-solar. This replacement of gas has eliminated 38 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent per year, or twice the current world net carbon capture rate. What is more, replacing the gas has also eliminated the mining and processing of the gas, the health costs of the air pollution from mining and burning the gas, and the need for and cost of capture equipment and carbon dioxide pipelines. Carbon capture and direct air capture only increase air pollution health damage, mining, pipelines, and costs. Plus, a single dollar spent on carbon capture simply increases carbon dioxide relative to spending the same dollar on renewables replacing a fossil source. The bottom line is that we should invest in electrification and replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy instead of subsidizing carbon capture, direct air capture, and related gimmicks. 2.2 million schoolchildren in Delhi already have irreversible lung damage. Their lungs will never fully grow. Adults are developing chronic breathlessness and inflammation.
