Making the Invisible Visible: A Walk for Clean Air This morning, at the invitation of Public Square, I had the honor of using the WalkTalkConnect platform to highlight a cause that touches every breath we take — clean air. I walked with Eng.Tabaro and Ruth, two young professionals passionately advocating for clean air and climate justice. We used a small AirCasting monitor to track real-time PM2.5 pollution levels along our route through Kampala Central Division. The results were sobering: much of the air we breathed was classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” What does that mean in real terms? It means that children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions are at risk—just by walking through their own city. This is a serious health risk. “Why does this matter?”, you ask…. Because what we can’t see can hurt us. Fine particle pollution comes from vehicles, open burning, construction dust, and industrial emissions. These tiny particles get deep into our lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of asthma, heart disease, strokes, and even cancer. It’s a silent health crisis hiding in plain sight. The City of Philadelphia has less than three months until our contract with the trash incinerator in Chester expires. Burning trash produces toxic air and ash that make our planet and our communities sick. That's why we banned trash incinerators in Philly in the 1980s. If something isn't safe for Philly, it isn't safe for Chester. During yesterday's budget hearing with the Sanitation Department, the Parker Administration made it clear that they still oppose efforts to end our dirty deal with trash incinerators. This is disappointing, especially since Mayor Parker ran for office on the promise to make us Clean, Green, and Safe. It isn't too late for Mayor Parker to do the right thing and stop trashing our air! I will keep fighting until everyone in Philly and Chester has the clean air and healthy environment they deserve! ✊🏾

The poorest among us suffer the most, unable to escape the toxic air that surrounds them. Families are gasping for clean air, children are falling sick, and millions of lives are being cut short. Tourism is declining and our global reputation is crumbling. The cloud of pollution covers hundreds of kilometres. Cleaning it up will need major changes and decisive action - from governments, companies, experts and citizens. We need a collective national response, not political blame games. As Parliament meets in a few days, MPs will all be reminded of the crisis by our irritated eyes and sore throats. It is our responsibility to come together and discuss how India can end this crisis once and for all.

Coming back to Delhi from Wayanad where the air is beautiful and the AQI is 35, was like entering a gas chamber. The blanket of smog is even more shocking when seen from the air. Delhi’s pollution gets worse every year. We really should put our heads together and find a solution for cleaner air. It’s beyond this party or that, it’s practically impossible to breathe especially for kids, elders and those with respiratory issues. We just have to do something about it.

Most of our major cities are living under a blanket of poisonous air. Millions of children are getting lung diseases, their future is being destroyed, and people are getting cancer. Older people are struggling to breathe. This is an interesting issue because I am certain that there would be full agreement between the government and us on this. This is not an ideological issue; everybody in the House agrees that air pollution—and the damage it is doing to our people—is something we should co-operate on. I think it is important that the government develops a plan to get rid of air pollution in our cities. We are more than happy to co-operate with the government to develop such a plan. On this issue, we can show the country that we can work together on something that is critical. In a warm room, with no ice and no winter, he drew the air from a glass of ether until it boiled cold and drank the heat from the water around it, until the water froze. No one had ever done it before. Then he wrote it down and walked away. No machine, no patent, no fortune. Just the proof, on a bench. It sat there the better part of a century. A British bench built the first machine that worked, and a Scot carried it across the world to Australia, where it froze meat and cooled beer. But cold was only half the story. ❄️📖 To master the air itself took another Scot. When the Houses of Parliament burned down in 1834, David Boswell Reid made the new building breathe, its gothic spires its lungs. At St George's Hall in Liverpool in 1851 he built what is often called the first air-conditioned building on earth. It should have made him. He died forgotten in America instead. 40 years on, Willis Carrier built the machine and earned his name as the father of modern air conditioning. He earned every bit of it. But he did not make the cold. The cold was British. America took that inheritance and cooled the world with it, and that is no theft. That is what an inheritance is for.
