In a BBC Breakfast interview this morning, Danny Kruger of Reform UK was pressed on the party’s plans to cut around £50bn from the benefits bill. His response cut through the usual political hedging: “Those that can work, should be working. It is outrageous that the taxpayer is spending hundreds of billions of pounds a year. People are getting up in the morning, going to work and paying very, very high taxes, in order to support other people who can work, but won’t.” This is basic common sense and would command majority support across the country. The benefits system has been stretched and abused for far too long. Payments are going out for the mildest issues that, let’s be honest, most people have to deal with in everyday life. Support should be reserved for serious, enduring cases where people genuinely cannot work and need real help. Reform proposes scrapping Personal Independence Payments (PIP) for working-age adults and the health element of Universal Credit, replacing them with a new Health Security Allowance limited to the most severe cases, with other support delivered through council-run accounts.

This is the reality in #Mogadishu today. A disabled man, who spent his life savings building a home for his family, has it demolished without warning, due process, or compensation. No notice. No opportunity to prepare. Just devastation and a family left with nothing. Even if these properties sit on government land, this is not how a state should act. The rule of law requires due process centred around transparency & humane treatment including fair notice, proper court orders & compensation or resettlement if needed. Anything less erodes trust and punishes the very people a government is meant to protect. Heartbreaking stuff ⤵️

Health, Education, and pulling people out of poverty remain the three most important measures of development of any nation. That is why my support for these critical areas continues to remain a priority. Today, Friday 9th May, I visited a healthcare facility established and managed by the Church of Nigeria, the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa. After inspecting the facility, I thanked the proprietor and his team for the good work they are doing in helping to ease the burden of our struggling healthcare system, especially for maintaining such a neat and conducive environment for patients. In support of their efforts, I made a token donation of 10 million naira. I encouraged them to remain committed to their service to humanity and also assured them of my continued support for the hospital, healthcare workers, and the healthcare system in general.
