An alert bystander, running along the river's edge near NIFS called MESA 911 Dispatch after seeing/hearing someone enter the water, go under and not surface. Following the noise, the runner made an effort to make contact with the person in the water, but did not see him once he neared the area. The man stayed on scene to assist IFD with the last seen point, which was crucial to the success of finding the victim in such a large body of water. Within 40 minutes of entering the water IFD Divers located the victim, approximately 15 feet from shore, 6 feet down, water temp. about 65 degrees, visibility was less than a foot. Thus far in 2026, IFD has had 28 Dive Runs with 12 of those marked working. This is the 9th fatal drowning in Marion County for 2026 with 2 additional that were non-fatal. Working Dive Rescue University Blvd and Blake St Dispatched at 6:58 PM 14 IFD Units Dispatched – Including IFD Tactical Dive Team 7 and IFD Tactical Dive Team 14 Victim Located by Diver 3 at 8:08 PM Victim pronounced deceased by IEMS On Scene Medical Doctor at 8:13 PM The incident and investigation have been turned over to DNR. Any additional information will come from DNR. 93 WIBC Indianapolis
